  1. I LOVE bedside reporting!! The patient feels involved, it promotes bonding, the pt can clarify any information. I want to see my pt as I am getting report, when you are in the room you're more likely to give better report bc you have reminders! I want to look at the orders in the computer with the nurse, to make sure orders have been followed through , and meds have been given and signed off. If there is family, I ask the pt if it's ok to give report in the room, and even when there is family I keep my voice low. However; there are times I don't report everything at bedside, when we step out, I tell the RN about STDs, EAB, SAB, etc! Instead of saying " have a nice day" I'll start saying " have the day you deserve" ya know, let karma sort that sh..t out 😂
  2. We have a pit protocol, there is a checklist we have to follow. If it doesn't meet the checklist we turn it off, and reassess! Doctors have to follow the protocol as well! Makes it so much easier! We used to have problems before, the nurses would see a late decel or minimal variability and the doctors called it a variable and moderate variability, just to keep the pit going! Instead of saying " have a nice day" I'll start saying " have the day you deserve" ya know, let karma sort that sh..t out 😂
  3. As a new grad, I would not limit my options! still apply at the units that interest you, but at the end you should take any job offer! It's hard enough to find a job as a new grad, it's even harder to get into specialty areas! At this point I would look to get at least 1-2 years of experience even in areas that don't interest you! I worked jobs that made me miserable, depressed, I even started to hate nursing ! I stayed strong, was aiming for 1-2 years experience, and today I am working in a specialty that I loved from day one in nursing school and I thought I would never stand a chance to get hired in this specialty, and today I can honestly say, nursing is bigger than I thought! It's more than just one nursing job ! Those years of sacrifice got me where I am today! Good luck! Positive vibes :)
  4. Wow at #2 question!!! 🙈I can't believe you're even thinking that! Lying is a BIG deal, especially in the field of nursing! I don't know where you live, but every job that requires a title/degree in order to work at their facility , will require proof that you hold a degree! Otherwise, we would have a bunch of random people who don't hold a degree, practice as nurses!#dangerzone
  5. IMO Showing up frequently late for work is unprofessional! It is not fair for previous nurses to wait after long exhausting hours to give report to the oncoming nurse! I can understand if a nurse is late because of bad weather conditions. Even then, nurses should leave the house way earlier. I haven't called off in over a year, and I make sure I arrive at work 30-40 mins early , just in case there are traffic issues. Sometimes it is okay to call off or be late, things do happen, hopefully not often!
  6. Staying for 3 years in ICU will not make you a better L&D nurse! Working on L&D makes you a good L&D nurse! Your ICU experience will not go to waste, it can be very helpful! Especially when it comes to time management, prioritizing , and working well under pressure! L&D can be a very stressful environment, things can change quickly and you have to think fast just like in MICU! I think you will do great in L&D, because of your experience in MICU! Good luck!
  7. Unprofessional, inappropriate, inconsiderate !
  8. I would do anything in the world not to be a charge nurse or manager! Too much headache and I hate hearing people complain!!! I love positive vibes :)
  9. Personally I don't think nursing is the hardest job out there ! However, getting your masters as a nurse is a must! Why you ask?! Because if you work in a fast paced unit, that requires physical force; or to act fast; adjust to daily policy changes, and walk/run for 12 hours, sometimes without breaks. I cannot imagine myself working in such units as a 50-60 year old, and retirement age will probably be 75 for me 🙈🙈. I also know some amazing nurses who are in their late 50s and they function better than us young nurses! It's hard to predict how we will age and what we can and cannot handle as a bedside nurse! Desk job careers are ageless: you can function at any age! This is my way of thinking about my future . You can probably tell I'm worried about my career and aging terrifies me. I feel weak now in my 20s I can only imagine how much I can handle in the future lol🙈
  10. Oh how I wish that wiping butts and collecting urine as a nurse , was the hardest part of my job! 🙈
  11. It's a lifestyle that attracts diseases!
  12. I absolutely love bedside reporting! The patient is involved, important information is less likely to be missed, pt can clarify information if it was miscommunicated. Both nurses are looking at the computer orders, meds, I&Os , and make sure everything is done and signed off!!! This is my favorite part, I hate to waste time calling the nurse, waking her up and asking if pt received am meds, had labs drawn, or any other orders that were not signed off! There are a few things that cannot be said at the bedside, so we communicate those once we leave pt's room!
