The election 2024 Thread

Published

I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.

Get out the popcorn for this one.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

Congressional Republicans complained and whined about immigration law and border security.  Now they are like the little dog who caught the truck they were chasing.

Republican obstruction will be a powerful campaign tool for democrats as Republicans try to spin their compulsion to put Trump before their sworn duties to the country.  Pop some popcorn, this is going to be interesting.

I haven't read the bill like you obviously have, but from what I've heard it sounds like a hot piece of garbage.

I bet you have heard that.  The SOTH was saying that before the bill was available for review and after he refused to participate in the crafting.  Senator Lankford called the good Christian Speaker on that false witness about being excluded.

Meanwhile, the Senate minority leader endorses the legislation and so does the Border Patrol Union.

"The national security legislation we're preparing to take up will invest heavily in the capabilities and capacity America and our allies need to regain the upper hand over this emerging axis of authoritarians. Make no mistake: the gauntlet has been thrown. And America needs to pick it up,” McConnell said on Monday.

The second endorsement of the border deal came from the union that represents workers at the Border Patrol – the rare labor group that's known for its ties to former President Donald Trump, who has urged Republicans to reject the Senate agreement.

Despite its Trump ties, the National Border Patrol Council endorsed the Senate deal in a Monday statement, saying that the bill would "codify into law authorities that U.S. Border Patrol agents never had in the past.”

The deal that's formally named the Border Act, the product of months-long talks led by Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.), is expected to face a pivotal test vote on Wednesday.

"While not perfect, the Border Patrol Act of 2024 is a step in the right direction and is far better than the current status quo,” the statement read.

When Trump House members obstruct this legislation to appease Trump, they will be giving Biden a campaign gift.  Trump's devoted fan base won't agree, but millions of moderates and independent voters will notice.

Who told you that?

Some analysis that I heard from a trusted source.  Its a local talk show host.  Michael Brown, former FEMA director.

It was from one person.  Haven't done much research on my own at this time.

Trusted source?  Is it possible that what they told you is a huge simplification?  Is there a single bill that could "solve " the border problem?  Does this bill actually do harm?  I'm not taking Mike Johnson's word for anything.

Of course it is.  There is much left to understand about it from over what I know so far.  Didn't I imply that?

So far, from what I know, it's garbage.

What's your opinion on it?  From where did you get your information to help you  form your opinion?

I don't trust any of them.

A real expert on immigration legislation; the AM radio host who struggled to manage FEMA and quite famously was in way over his head with hurricane Katrina response.  It seems odd to take his analysis at face value and even repeat it without checking out some other sources.  That's just me.

Quite famously recognized as the Bush administration's scapegoat for Katrina.

Even it happened to be correct, I don't know that being "over his head" in trying to manage the federal govt response to biggest natural disaster in recent history disqualifies him from having an opinion that others should consider.

That's a funny criticism when we have a president that most of us wouldn't trust to answer customer questions as a WalMart greeter.

He's read the bill, was a experienced attorney who has worked at high levels of govt.  I've listened to him intermittently over several years.  Don't always agree with him, but most of the time makes sense.  He has proven to be right on many issues.  He spent about 2 hours on the bill today as opposed to the minutes long clips of various folks you see on TV.  Assuming what he reiterated about the bill is accurate, I've come to my own conclusion that it's garbage.

You can find his show on the IHeart app if interested.

Most of us can't and don't want to read and comprehend 370 pages of legalese and Washington speak written by political lawyers.  We have to rely on other sources.

A president you wouldn't trust as a Walmart greeter, yet who seems to be able to do the job of the presidency with some skill.

I didn't say that no one shouldn't consider the fellow's opinion, only that it seems odd to accept his opinion on something without any corroboration or comparative analysis.  It seems odd to just accept opinions from people with no particular expertise and then share them as if they are accurate.

Senator Lankford has defended the bill.

You both criticized the source I used to gain some insight on the border bill.  I asked if you could point me to something better, but haven't heard anything...

Consider reading the bill?

There's a reason historians treasure primary sources.
