I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.
Get out the popcorn for this one.
QuoteFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.
Arizona Republican Party Chairman Jeff DeWit resigned Wednesday after he could be heard in a leaked recording offering a job to U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake, asking her to name a price that would keep her out of politics for 2 years . 10 minute clip suspected was released by Lake --- radio pundits suggested ? she has Trump tape too..

What DeWit said on the Kari Lake recording
"There are very powerful people that want to keep you out," DeWit tells Lake in what he described as a "selectively edited" recording, first published by The Daily Mail. "But they're willing to put their money where their mouth is in a big way."
He did not say who asked him to approach Lake but said they were "back East." He asks her repeatedly not to tell anyone about the conversation.
"Is there a number at which—" DeWit asks at one point, before Lake interjects: "I can be bought?"
Hear conversation... clearly Kari's voice.

I suspect this isn't anything new in politics.

Listening to the recording it surely seems like Lake was the source. That's quite a peek into republican politics right there. Corruption seems to be a strategy.
Things supposedly would be dire and desperate under Trump. Apparently Biden thinks of himself as the only one who good enough to beat him.
Still a narcissist at his advanced age.
"To beat Trump again, as he did in 2020, Biden's team is focused on warning that Trump poses a serious threat to U.S. democracy, and that abortion and other personal freedoms are at stake. They are banking on that approach winning over independents and sparking enthusiasm among lukewarm Democrats.Biden, 81, made the controversial decision to run for a second term in large part because he was convinced he would face Trump, 77, and because he thinks he is the Democrat who can beat him in the November election.
"If Trump wasn't running, I'm not sure I'd be running," Biden said at a fundraising event last month. "We cannot let him win."

Pay attention.
QuoteJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft on Tuesday went on the defensive after the state auditor claimed Ashcroft violated state law by failing to turn over cybersecurity reviews of local election offices.
The audit, released Monday, also was critical of Ashcroft's abrupt departure from the bipartisan Electronic Registration Information Center, a national system designed to help states maintain accurate voter rolls that has been targeted by conspiracy theories.
Ashcroft, at a news conference, criticized what he called "false accusations" in Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick's audit of his office.
Ashcroft doesn't want to provide documentary evidence that he is following the law relative to election security at the same time that he exits the state from the national system that helps to keep voter registration logs up to date and accurate. That's great preparation for fraud, not prevention of fraud.
Why did Ashcroft quit that group ERIC? While I can't get into his head, I can note this relevant fact;
QuoteFormer President Donald Trump had urged state election officials to move away from ERIC, claiming on social media that it "pumps the rolls" for Democrats. Ashcroft opted to leave the ERIC system last year.
The conspiracy theories spread like urine in a pool of right wing politics in the era of Trump. They are necessary in the right wing movement to get conservative Americans to set aside norms and accept attacks on our democratic systems and processes. In this election year, the outraged republican voices worried about election fraud are urged to abandon systems that help keep state elections secure by the liar who has been shouting about election fraud for 4 years.
Republican voters are getting conned. Trump and Republicans are setting the stage for a corrupt election this fall. Maybe they are afraid that they can't win in free and fair elections.

I don't even believe recordings anymore:) I'm getting better at detecting AI but it's still going uphill. At any rate, an innocent person would not resign. Of all the corruption that happens, this one isn't on the top of my list but any thoughts why she is releasing it now instead of when it happened?

Biden has proven that he can beat Trump in a general election. When our democracy is at stake its probably best to stick with a known winner like Biden.
Talk about luke warm enthusiasm, the republican primary results so far have been somewhat underwhelming for Trump. Maybe that's why his victory speech was so dark and cranky the other night.

I'm not sure things would be "dire and desperate under Trump". That's strong language. But I do think that he would want to dismantle things that are supposed to keep our democracy in check, or the very least cause distrust in long established institutions like our democratic court system, the CDC, the DOJ, the FBI. He has not conceded the election he lost and has proven he doesn't believe in Democracy. I have some concerns.
I remember saying long ago when someone complained about Obama being arrogant that it just comes with being President. You have to think very highly of yourself to think you can become President of the United States and when you succeed it's hard to be humble.
I can't think of a President in my lifetime that didn't have a big fat ego or arrogance. Can't think of any of them with humility.
I would hardly call Biden a narcissist though. But he is arrogant and egotistical. Shapiro (and you) clearly disagree.

Carter had humility.

He was arrogant enough to say had he won a 2nd term, peace in the Middle East would've been permanent saying things like "I have moral authority". Peace has never existed in the Middle East and that's an arrogant thing to say. He was a micromanager and once fired five cabinet members. He took on the left and the right and came out of nowhere to be President, that takes an ego.
However, I don't remember the day to day activities of his Presidents as I was in my early 20's and involved in other things. I'll probably agree out of the bunch he was the least egotistical and empathetic of most of them.
That said, he rewrote the book on what it means to be an ex-President and especially towards the end he did have some humility about it.
Here's an archived article from the time of his presidency:
QuoteWASHINGTON April 22 (UPI) James Fallows, President Carter's former chief speech writer, says that Mr. Carter took office "in profound ignorance" of his job and had made matters worse, "by a combination of arrogance, complacency and insecurity.”
QuoteThe Real Jimmy Carter reveals a man who has been given a dangerously free pass by historians, but who in reality is not only a failed ex-president, but as vindictive as he is egotistical, and a self-righteous busybody who leaves disaster in his wake.

Obviously opinion pieces.

I didn't contend that Carter didn't have an ego, only that he had humility as president. He is widely thought of as one of our most humble and kind presidents.

How Biden plans to fight Trump in 2024, hoping for a repeat win
You just have to admire Trump's commitment to projection. It's unfortunate that so many Republicans voters are blind to it, complicit even.
One has to wonder how much of Trump's campaign money is paying his legal fees.
