The culture of AN

Published

Singing in my Heart is taking a break from All Nurses. This is not the first time one of our esteemed posters has felt the need to do this. I would like to suggest to the moderators the option to flag a post "against the culture of All Nurses." This way the moderator could be on alert to which threads/posts/posters are driving members away from the site. If members keep flagging posts that are appropriate for this site, they will lose this privilege.

I believe his screen name is "Song In My Heart." I could be wrong.

Ahh thank you. I believe you're right.

GrnTea is around....we won't take the report feature away ;)...you can always PM one of us too.

Oh I didn't mean the current report button feature. I meant the proposed one in the original post that was in addition to the current report button, which now seems obsolete. Glad to hear GrnTea is around.

I am biased, I admit. I love this place and wish something like this had been around in my first years as a nurse. I spent a lot of time brooding over things and thinking I was the only one who felt the way newer nurses say they are feeling every single day.

We're all unique people with our foibles and our good points, including guides and moderators. We have people who leave in a huff over rancorous feedback when it's clear to a lot of us that they were the main instigator of the rancor in the first place.

When we communicate by text only we miss a lot. I used to be really amused when one member would say to another, "I know you've hated my guts since the day I joined" and the other person will say back "What? I'm not even sure who you are!" True story, something similar occurred with me not long ago and I joined 9 years ago! Not quite as amused as I was!

One thing I am sure of. You can report stuff that just seems sketchy. It doesn't have to be an allnurses banning offense. I send stuff to the staff just to have another set of eyes on it, and then I forget about it. It's really OK to do that. In my opinion much better than those "reputation system" rules.

As far as language is concerned, I've noticed many people hide the word "ass". "Ass" is not on the no-no list! If you, like me, love our profanity just let 'er rip and see what gets the asterisk treatment! That last was somewhat tongue-in-cheek :-))

My solution to posters (or people I interact with in life) who are obviously antagonizing and instigating is to simply ignore them. I refuse to waste time responding (which is what they want). I have found that it infuriates people when you do not allow them to have control over your feelings or emotions. By responding, you are only giving in to what they want and they win by achieving their goal of angering or upsetting you.

Silence can be more powerful than words.

Your point is immensely salient. As another formerly prominent member wisely mentioned, "Do not allow people to rent too much space inside your head."

People are looking for a strong reaction when they bait you in with insults or clownish behavior. When you do not give them the reaction they're seeking, the trolls will eventually retreat into their miserable caves.

I get discouraged by the obvious trolling in the Breakroom.

There are too many posts that involve snarky remarks and criticism of the posts of others without any other reasonable contribution to the thread. If one wants to be snarky while also attempting to participate in the discussion, fine. But to lurk with only the intent to snipe snark is tiresome.

Its an internet forum board. Not the end of the world.

This!

Allnurses.com is a professional nursing peer to peer network; therefore, the administration team has decided to uphold an image of professionalism on these forums. This means no swearing or cursing like a sailor, racial or religious villification, name-calling, or other actions that are unbecoming of professional registered and practical nurses. .

What I really wish could be more moderated is the atrocious spelling, text-speak and grammar exhibited by certain members. It truly makes me cringe when I see self-proclaimed professionals confusing "there", "their" and "they're", misspelling common words, etc. I know auto-correct is a monster, but some of the offenders clearly just don't care.

If AN wants to uphold a professional image, I feel this is an area that is sadly neglected and in dire need of attention. I'm aware that text speak is reportable, but much, much more often than profanity or controversial topics, issues pertaining to the English language are largely overlooked, despite the TOS.

I actually agree with you, but those brave souls who post reminders on the importance of correct spelling, grammar and phraseology are frequently shouted down and referred to as the 'grammar police.' It's a lite form of anti-intellectualism, IMHO.

As a shameless member of the grammar police, I wish I could like this more than once!

Or it could be 'Music in my Heart', being that he used musical notes in his screen name.
