I am still a pre-nursing student, but I just finished with Anatomy and I don't know whether or not to sell my book back. I am definitely keeping all of the atlases but the textbook? How many of you kept you Anatomy textbook and have actually used it?

I heard that you supposed to keep it, and even our instructors said if you sold you A&P book, buy another one. But personally, even I kept mine, I never opened it during my first semester, which I just finished with an "A". Maybe, it will be more of a use in following semesters?

I sold my anatomy text and there have been a couple of times since that I really could have used it. If you have other sources of info, then I say sell it back. I know my A&P book was HUGE and I really don't think I would want to move that thing around with me. I have a hard enough time with all my other nusing texts!

Keep your anatomy and physiology book. I have found it useful as a reference for review on body systems which is the basis for everything you're about to learn in nursing school. The nursing books don't go into as much detail.

I vote for keep it. I just finished my first term of nursing school too and I can't tell you how many times I pulled it out for reference. In a lot of ways it was just a comfort thing too... I spent a year getting cozy with that book and understood things pretty well by the time I hit each exam, so when certain things came up this first term of nursing school I would pull it out and take a quick look at what we had learned in A & P which really helped with my initial recall, then I went back to the nursing text and all of the sudden it just seemed a lot more understandable. I also used it for reference too when my nursing texts assumed I already possessed an understanding of a certain concept... I could reach over and pull out my A & P book and see what the heck they were referring to.
As an additional FYI, I've also kept my micro, chem and nutrition texts for the same reason (but by far A & P is at the top of the list for books to keep). My rule of thumb while going through pre-reqs was to sell back anything non nursing related and keep the rest.

Keep it. I sold mine back and wish I had kept it. It would have been pretty handy for reviewing the body systems. I kept my Mirco book.. and haven't used it once.... go figure.

What I did was sell back my A & P book and get the bucks, and then I bought an older version online (http://www.half.com, http://www.ebay.com, or http://www.amazon.com are good choices) for only $3 bucks or so. The information is not going to be updated of course, but if you need it for general reference only (which is all I refer to it for) then it is a great way to get more money back now and still have the source to refer to.

You will need a good anat and a good phys book as you go forward. Good idea from above poster... would not have thought of it...

I kept my Anatomy book. I studied more for that class than any I have taken so I am very familiar with it. It is also a really nice book, my kids enjoy looking at it.

I'm going through the same thing. My A&P book has lasted me 2 semesters so I think I should sell it and the lab book before both are made cheap by a new edition. That being said, I LOVE my anatomy book and I enjoy how it explains things so easily. (Hole's Anatomy 10th edition) I need the money BAD for my textbooks for next semester. Arghh, what a pickle!

Definitely KEEP IT.
I used just the other day. We needed to trace CSF from production to drainage, etc. There were no good pictures in my Med-Surg book, but there was a great picture in my A&P book.
In addition, whatever system you're working on, cardiac, neuro, etc., the nursing books cover how it pertains to nursing, but don't go into any depth. If you need to see good pictures or review something, your A&P book will help you.
In addition, I keep all my nursing books for future reference. I've referred back to my Nurs 101 book in Med-Surg.

I would definitely keep the A&P book. They are a valuable tool that you can use throughout your nursing career. However if it is a money situation, then sell the book. There are always plenty of A&P books floating around bookstores that you can pick up later on.
