Texas Tech Second-Degree BSN
Has anyone done this program? Or has anyone been accepted to this program?? I am wanting to start this program next Fall, and I just wanted some input. Thanks!!!
Hello, I see you attended Texas tech, which Im planning on attending also. Im so nervous and have three children almost the same age as yours. I need advice on how you did it/ coped. Im planning on starting my prereqs and need advice on the web based degree and any general advice you can give me. Thanks
RN2BENAUSTIN, I just got notice that I have been extended an interview with Tech here in El Paso. I'm a little nervous about the interview but I just had one this past weekend with Baylor, so I have an idea of what to expect however I'm a little nervous about the experience aspect that they might be looking for. I have no real real experience in the medical field and wonder if maybe you know someone that might have gotten accepted that also didn't have experience. I'm currently a Massage therapist and that's really the only experience I have outside of office experience. I'm a career changer also!

Hi!
Do you know if interview emails were sent to applicants in Austin too?
I do not know about Austin, however I do know that the interviews are a week after the ones here in El Paso. So it is possible that Austin has not let you'all know yet. I've just been checking Merlin everyday (lol) and it was there... Then I logged into my email to see an email from the coordinator.I received the email later on in the day yesterday and they had quite a few interview slots for both days, so I'm assuming that I was one of the first ones to know. I know you're anxious but I bet you will know probably next week. They give you a week to write an essay as mine is due 10/19. I hope that gives you an idea...

Thank you for replying! And GOODLUCK during your interview. I haven't received anything and the wait was/is killing me. I called them and I was told Austin has not been sent out yet. My guess like yours, will be next week or even the end of this week. I hope Merlin doesn't keep a count of how many times I log on:). The wait is too hard!
Wow, I never even thought about them keeping track but doubt they do. That is funny tho.. hehe I know your anxious as I! I have been checking everyday and well yesterday when I checked I actually had gotten the interview times and chose one. Then I went on to read the email that was sent... I'm sure you'll be granted an interview so prepare yourself for the essay. Im assuming its the same for everyone considering the questions...
> An essay is also required and must be emailed BY NOON October 19th. The Second Degree BSN program is a rigorous, internet-based curriculum. Due to the intensive use of technology, suitable computer skills are necessary for completing degree requirements.
> 1. This program requires you to be a self-starter and accountable for much of your own learning. What is your experience with independent learning and what skills do you possess that will help you to be successful in this type of program?
> 2. In order to help us get to know you better, please share a life experience or an interesting fact about yourself (i.e. foreign travel, previous career, leadership role/skill, etc.)
luvlimandee... Congrats on getting an interview! That's half the battle:yeah: I was one of the few that got in without clinical experience. Having experience does help, several of the students were CA's before starting. I felt like they had an advantage in the beginning. They also had to face learning "proper nursing school" procedures can be different than how they had learned on the floor. All I had was volunteer experience and a strong desire. Just be yourself in the interview and remember you are interviewing them as well! You are about to dedicate 12 months of your life to the program, and pay quite a bit of $. I have nothing but positive things to say about the program. What I believe sets Tech apart from other local nursing schools is the amount on clinical hours. We have over 300 per semester, and you are placed on the same floor for the entire program. The majority of the hours are on that floor, and then you have rotations with other specialties. I feel very comfortable on my floor and hope to get a job there when I graduate. There are many advantages to this, you will be taught one on one with an experienced nurse for the entire year. The "coaches" only have one student, this facilitates a comfort level that is conducive to critical thinking. I have 3-4 of my own patients and "work" 2 shifts per week (12 hour shifts). That's another benefit, Tech believes in preparing students for longer hours and you are encouraged to work 12 hour shifts. I work night shifts since I have three kiddos. Good luck on that interview - I look forward to hearing how it goes!
Hello, your post was comforting given all the terrifying mixed info you get in trying to figure out which program to try and get into. I have been looking into the AE MSN program at UT, the ACC ADN program and the 2nd degree TTU program. Recently, I have been leaning strongly towards the TTU 2nd degree program, but I'm wondering and a little concerned about my chances of being accepted the 1st time I apply. I'm really not looking forward to getting my prereqs completed only to have to wait a year or longer to get into the program. If you have the time to enlighten me on your experience and that of anyone else you know of that completed the program I would be extremely grateful! Thank you.
need2banurse~ My best advice would be to go for it, our cohort size was about 30 I believe and I think they said 120 applied? I know ACC and UT are competitive too - so don't let that hold you back. The Tech program is the most intense out of the three (only because of the accelerated nature). All three choices are good ones, so you cant go wrong. And now there are other nursing schools in Austin, so they may not be as competitive. This is a second career for me, so I opted for the quickest path to a BSN. Since I know I want to continue towards a MSN or DNP at some point, the UT program was very tempting. For me, the class schedules at UT were going to be a challenge since they are more traditional 8-5 hours and I have three kids. The other issue I had was that UT wants you to choose your path for the MSN program in the beginning, I didn't feel prepared to make that decision. I actually figured it out that I can get my masters in the same amount of time going with the Tech program. I am so happy that I chose this path, but I did alot of soul searching to get to it. I made an Excel spreadsheet with all the pro and cons, costs, time involvement etc. to help guide my choice.
I should say that the program is intense and you must prepare to not have a social life, travel or even relax for about a year. They are very honest and give you fair warning. Nothing could have prepared me for the Summer session, 19 hours and 340 clinical hours in 9 weeks was very hard. We actually moved and remodeled at the same time (not my choice). Such is life This semester I'm taking 24 hours and I feel like it has been a breeze...my perspective has changed after that summer session though. We have less than 2 months left until graduation...so the end is in sight! I wish you luck and look forward to hearing an update!
Hey all,
I just read most of the posts and found it all very helpful. I too have applied for the 2011 session in Austin and am anxiously awaiting a response. Has anyone heard yet?? Also, for the people who are already in the program, could you possibly tell me approximately what the tuition is because I am having a hard time finding out what it is. Lastly, (sorry for the 20 questions, I am very nervous!) what kind of interview questions were asked?
Thanks for your input and good luck to everyone!!
AustinurseBSN...I'm a current student and you should be able to find the cost of tuition on the main Tech website. It may have changed but the program has cost me about 21,000. I was able to get student loans to cover it. And Tech does a great job of telling students about available scholarships. I know most of the students received scholarships every semester to help offset the cost. For interview questions- expect "why do you want to be a nurse?"- other than that I cannot recall- I was so nervous! Just be yourself and like I was telling someone else - ask questions because you need to make sure the program is going to work for you as well. Good luck!
