Has anyone done this program? Or has anyone been accepted to this program?? I am wanting to start this program next Fall, and I just wanted some input. Thanks!!!

RN2BENAUSTIN,

I have been on the website numerous times and I always feel so well informed after reading your posts. Thank you for all the honest and positive information.

I am currently finishing my pre-reqs at ACC and will be applying to Tech's 2nd Degree program next summer for the Spring 2012 Austin cohort.

I know you've mentioned the intense workload, how do you manage? (other than by having great organizational skills). Do you study with other students? Or are you mostly on your own?

For those individuals that were not accepted into the program, would you mind sharing what was your resume like? How was your GPA: overall and in the sciences? Did you have volunteer experience? Did you have CNA experience? etc...

Has anyone tried to register for Anatomy at Austin Community College during Add/Drop and actually gotten in? My friend was actually notified late that she had, indeed, passed the assessment test and the class filled up, literally, the day before!! She was able to register for the online course, but would really prefer to take the class with me at Rio Grande with *****. Has anyone ever actually succeeded in getting into a class this way and do you have any helpful suggestions? We saw the post about trying to sit in for lecture and we also understand that you most likely can't sit in on labs because of overfilling rules? She will sit in for lecture but we're really hoping she will be able to somehow get the timing just right to be able to drop the online course she has and add the classroom course!! Thanks for your help!

Yes it is possible to get into a class during that time. I think you are talking about late registration. The best way to do it is to make sure you register as soon as it opens. I have registered that way each semester and have gotten into the class I wanted.

99% on TEAS V; 3.86 overall, 4.0 science GPAs; extensive volunteer, extracurricular, and leadership experience; no working CNA experience (just the clinical hours from the CNA course, which I finish next week); dental and orthodontic assistant for 7 years...

CAgirlintx,

With those stats, how did you not get into the program??

need2banurse~ My best advice would be to go for it, our cohort size was about 30 I believe and I think they said 120 applied? I know ACC and UT are competitive too - so don't let that hold you back. The Tech program is the most intense out of the three (only because of the accelerated nature). All three choices are good ones, so you cant go wrong. And now there are other nursing schools in Austin, so they may not be as competitive. This is a second career for me, so I opted for the quickest path to a BSN. Since I know I want to continue towards a MSN or DNP at some point, the UT program was very tempting. For me, the class schedules at UT were going to be a challenge since they are more traditional 8-5 hours and I have three kids. The other issue I had was that UT wants you to choose your path for the MSN program in the beginning, I didn't feel prepared to make that decision. I actually figured it out that I can get my masters in the same amount of time going with the Tech program. I am so happy that I chose this path, but I did alot of soul searching to get to it. I made an Excel spreadsheet with all the pro and cons, costs, time involvement etc. to help guide my choice.

I should say that the program is intense and you must prepare to not have a social life, travel or even relax for about a year. They are very honest and give you fair warning. Nothing could have prepared me for the Summer session, 19 hours and 340 clinical hours in 9 weeks was very hard. We actually moved and remodeled at the same time (not my choice). Such is life :uhoh3: This semester I'm taking 24 hours and I feel like it has been a breeze...my perspective has changed after that summer session though. We have less than 2 months left until graduation...so the end is in sight! I wish you luck and look forward to hearing an update!

Such great insight, thank you. I am finishing pre-req courses currently to apply for the Spring 2012 cohort in Austin.

Have any recent graduates from the BSN program complete the NCLEX yet? How prepared and confident do you feel? Tech's Second BSN program has a pass rate of 91% (roughly), just curious as to how prepared people feel after finishing a year of intensive study, then to take this exam?

This thread is a little discouraging.

I have a 3.94 overall gpa, a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in workforce development and a year of coursework in a phd program all from Ohio State. I have very high scores on the GRE (which I don't think they even consider). I have leadership and volunteer experience (just none in the medical field). I've worked in business, as a high school teacher, and as a research assistant. I don't have any nursing experience, but I was under the impression that is why these programs exist....for people who are changing careers and have degrees in other areas.

I am considering an alternate entry master's degree program and the Texas Tech Second Degree BSN.....I thought I would be pretty competitive (have high a's in both prerequisites I've taken.....anatomy and nutrition), but am worried now. I have already applied to the master's program and should find out about my acceptance sometime in the next few weeks. That program starts next fall. The Tech program is my first choice, but it worries me since the application and acceptance are both so much later than MSN. Basically if I get into the master's program, but decide to wait and take my chances with Tech and don't get in, I will be set back an entire year.

Stressball! Has anyone else been in the same position? What do you think?

Thanks!

Lindsey

chelsmarie15.. Funny you should ask about the NCLEX. I just took mine today and will find out on Thursday. So far everyone in our cohort has passed. And I believe there are only 3 more students taking it tomorrow. So if the last few of us pass, it will be a 100% pass rate. I can update this as I know the results for the rest of us. I feel the program does a wonderful job of preparing you to be a nurse. No program teaches to the NCLEX, there is no way to do this. The Nclex was the strangest assembly of questions and not at all what I suspected it would be. Tech's program is wonderful if you are independently motivated. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of support within your cohort and retention counselors, but you must be driven to succeed the intensity of the program.

How'd you do RN2BENAUSTIN? ...and weren't you saying something about applying to Seton's Versant Program? Any news from that opportunity?

chelsmarie15.. Thank you for asking..I passed :) We had a 100% pass rate and hire rate for our cohort. I am in currently in the Seton Versant program (week 3 of 18) and its going well. Now, more than ever I realize that the Tech program did an EXCELLENT job at preparing us to be competent and confident as new nurses. All of us feel fully prepared, which is rare from what I am seeing in other new nurses. I have met several other Versant students that have never worked a 12 hour shift in nursing school, or even started IV's or dealt with central lines. The Tech program has you doing full care for 3-4 patients by the end of the program, doing 12 hour shifts the entire time and if there are any skills you feel you need help - they will go out of their way to get you the help you need. I was in my last semester and wanted more IV experience, they sent me to the ER where I started 12 in a day.
