Teen Pregnancy and Other Schtuff

Published

If you have a pregnant student, do you let her rest throughout the day at intervals?

I just started thinking about this since with my new job, I will sometimes be at the high school. (Right now I am with 5th/6th grade)

I couldn't have lasted without resting when I was pregnant! There is no tired like pregnant tired.

What's the other "Schtuff?"

Ya know, like STDs, hickeys...schtuff.

They come to me with it all.

I've had 2 pregnant students and neither of them had to rest during the day (that I was a part of, anyways).

Do you have a place for the student to rest? It would be difficult in my office because it is an open room, no privacy.

Yep, I have as needed. Full support from the principal.

However, I cannot document the student is pregnant, because it cannot be part of their school file (HIPAA vs FERPA, yep). I can't even tell the staff the student is pregnant unless the student is willing to disclose. Yes, staff suspect because often it becomes obvious in the later stages, but hopefully the student is willing to disclose the fact to as needed teachers by then. I end up sending a vague email about the student having a medical need for breaks in the nurse's office.

Yes. I have 2 beds (real beds!) and they are more than welcome to rest and get snacks.

Eeeeooooooo. I'm glad I'm elementary and just have to deal with the occasional pregnant teacher cankles and sausage toes.

I have yet to deal with it, but I imagine if I didn't think she was milking it to get out of class, I would let her rest and have a granola bar. Or saltines :)

Me, too. I also can't document suspected STIs. Luckily, there is a teen clinic that meets once a week nearby. I have a stack of their cards.
