what do you talk about at work?

Published

Reading a recent threads re: problem co-workers who share way tooooooooo much personal info. What do you talk about at work. (we seem to talk about what take-out place we should order from-starting from eary in the shift) and then there are the many who talk about their latest food plan/diets.

so spill it...what are the hot topics at your place of work and what do you think about it, positive negative an/or neutral. What topics that come up daily make you want to go hide out somewhere/anywhere else?

I have friends in nursing and out of nursing and we have a lot of downtime in the summer months.

We talk a lot about everything. We are a pretty small night crew that generally works together. We talk about our families, new policies, interesting things we've seen or cases that we've had, medications we haven't seen before.

It's really a bad idea to assume that the people that you work with are your friends. They aren't. They are your business partners or business contacts and that's all. There will always be someone who enjoys stirring the pot. I have learned the hard way to never confide in anyone about anything in my personal life. Even the manager loves to gossip.

Gossip creates distrust and hard feelings that last for years.

So talk about the weather, children, books, movies, current events but never ever talk about your coworkers. Focus on your job. Set a good example of professional behavior.

You have no friends in nursing.

Someone must have stabbed your back badly. I have made great friends in nursing. Ones who cheered me on through IVF, who wouldn't let me do anything heavy when I did get pregnant. These people let me cry on their shoulder when I was going through my divorce and offered me all sorts of help when this happened to me when my daughter was 6 months old.

I made some of my best damn friends in nursing who are still my friends to this day and i don't even work there anymore.

All kinds of stuff. I don't offer much personal information about myself but occassionally may jump in on a "my kid did something hilarious" conversation. We talk about various diseases-last week we were looking up why Proscar shouldn't be handled by preggo women. That turned into an hr. long conversation and a bunch of interested nurses. For those of you who didn't know-it has adverse affects on the MALE fetus. Also RN-BSN programs, school experiences, things we wanna see/do. Not always appropriate, but usually stems from something we are doing. :)

We talk about everything from the latest youtube "viral videos" to how the people on maternity leave are doing. Even though I enjoy conversations I like to keep myself pretty busy and feel like I am wasting time if I sit around talking too much. We tend to talk about work a lot. If I am not sure about a patient's plan of care I like to bounce ideas off my co-workers before I call the doc so I get a better response if things need changed. By the end of three nights everyone tends to know background on everyone else's patients. Not sure how HIPPA that is but we are a team, and when things go badly it is best if the whole team knows what has been going on with a patient the last couple days.

Other than that we talk about kids, dogs, occasionally school (I don't like to think about school...bad memories :banghead:). There is a fair amount of gossip, usually about the new orientees or the residents. I typically shut up when that happens, but I like to figure out which residents I trust or not (and how much I need to argue with them lol). It is such a game to get new orders for patients on the night shift. Definitely my least favorite part of the job.

Yeah i have to say we spend most of the time at work talking about work. Especially as we have a lot of newer nurses, so we talk a lot about interesting cases, past and present, how doctors like different things done, unusual orders we've seen. We talk about our best and our worst decisions and days. I like knowing what is going on with everyone else's patients, especially if they aren't doing so well so I can be prepared to help out if needed. I also like to know who's caught up, who's behind so I know who needs help if I have free time.
