Taking Notes - By hand or by Laptop?

Do you guys take notes during class by writing them down or by typing them on your laptop? I'm just wondering which way you think is more effective, or which way has worked for you.

I would imagine you could take down more information with a laptop but I'm just used to taking notes by hand.

I handwrite my notes as well. I find it is better than typing since I feel like I have physical feedback. Also, like some have mentioned, If I bring my laptop into class, I get distracted by other things.

If you don't mind explaining, how does the livescribe pen work? Or can you just explain a little about what it does and how you use it?

I took a look at the Livescribe website http://www.livescribe.com/smartpen/index.html...wow...its expensive. The pen is around $170 and then you have to buy special paper for the pen which is expensive too. Neat idea though.

Before investing in lightscribe make sure your college allows taping of lectures, mine does not.

I prefer typing notes using my laptop and Microsoft OneNote. It makes it easy to organize and lets you search our notes later.

I write my notes by hand, i find it to be more efficient for me and for some odd reason if it wirte it down i never forget, so for exams i use tons of paper, because i have to write everything down in order for me to remember. i recycle too :)

I only hand write my notes during class. The only time I type out notes is when I use my hand written notes and make a study guide for an upcoming test!

the more you write the notes the more it will stick in your head! repetition is a must esp. for nursing concepts!

I'm surprised that most people prefer hand writing notes. I type so much faster than I write! If I hand write notes, more often than not, I miss a lot of things both in my notes and in what I hear because I'm trying to play catch up with one or the other. But then...I do write really slowly.

i, like others have stated, remember best when i hand write my notes. when i write little memos for myself, i never even need them because i just remember. however, when i write them in my blackberry, i don't remember nearly as often. of course, not everyone is the same so you should see what works best for you!

p.s. i feel snobby to bring my laptop to class... idk why my roommate does it all the time though :)

I handwrite my notes - if I type I don't put as much mindful attention into what I'm writing. When I get home I will usually type them up or rewrite them.

Hearing an entire classroom using laptops is distracting to me anyways.

just another thought ...

my college professor husband has a class this semester that has three students who have compromised hearing, two severely and the sound all those laptops make while being typed on interferes with their ability to take notes and hear what he says. none of the three uses sign language or has an intrepreter.

as a result of these students' difficulties hearing, he has asked that students not use laptops during lectures.
