You know it's going to be a crazy night at work, when
When you walk on the floor and the lady who has slapped, scratched and punched you repeatedly for 3 days is still here and you are assigned her....again!!!! When you have said lady AND another pt who we need to call security for, cause she is also punching at us... When you have these two such ladies and another pt who really needs a sitter, but alas no one available.... When you have all three of these ladies AND the one who can't keep off her call bell for 5 blessed seconds and yells at you for not bringing her a ginger ale pronto..."excuse me ma'am but I was busy being punched in the face by two other patients and could not get to your immediate demands before your finger could hit the call bell AGAIN!" And...being a CA I have 9+ other lovely patients who know how to behave themselves and are also in need of care, but they are being neglected because I am busy being abused by the above mentioned patients. Tell me again why I am in nursing school???

abington hospital dixon school of nursing
Hi I am the other person who made the dixon fb page. You make a group by starting at your own fb page. We reached only some of the people before class here on allnurses and at orientation we spread the word. Then I made flyers to hand out in class to let others know we are there. The staff at the school is very receptive to the group, so they may let you send out an email from the roster. Just ask. Also, I do keep the page settings private so everyone knows they are safe there. We have used the page as a study tool too. As tests get closer, we go to the discussions tab and ask each other questions. If a student answers a question, they post a question. That way it keeps it going. So far alot of us have done this, it really helps for those of us that can't get together for formal study group. The best part about the page....we felt like we knew each other before class even started! Congrats on your acceptance!!!!

Help With Calculation of Dosages
I have to apologize, when I set it up and posted the problem it changed the way it was laid out. If you can't understand it (and it is confusing shown this way) let me know and I will re explain it in words. But for the most part, figure out what you are ordered, 0.5g. How it is supplied 250mg per capsule. convert g to mg so you can get rid of the grams and mg and are left only with capsules. Multiply across, divide the results and it leaves you with 2 capsules. Always start with what is ordered, then fill in what you want (capsules in this case) and then add how it is supplied. Add accordingly to convert and cross off unwanted items (g and mg). leaves you only with capsules. Then do the math to get the answer. Hope that helps.

Help With Calculation of Dosages
I assume you mean 0.5g. This decimal is very important so make sure you are accurate in providing decimals. Ok so here goes the problem. The order reads:give 0.5g you place this in the problem first: 0.5g | | | | capsule ------------------------------------------------------- | | | | then you add how it is supplied: 0.5g | 1 capsule | | | capsule ------------------------------------------------------- | 250mg | | | Now you need to convert g to mg: 0.5g | 1 capsule | 1000mg | | capsule ------------------------------------------------------- | 250mg | 1g | | cross off and eliminate which leaves you with: 0.5g | 1 capsule | 1000mg | 500 | 2 capsule ------------------------------------------------------- | 250mg | 1g | 250 | This eliminates grams, and milligrams and results in capsules. So multiply across and divide. 500 divided by 250 = 2 so 2 capsules (Sorry I couldn't do overstrikes but I hope you can visualize the crossing off.)

Stupid questions!
In answer to: 1. I also had no immunization documentation, so I had titers done to "prove" my immunization status. Some came back low and I needed to update these. My school did not require me to get immunizations until after I was accepted. 2. I got letters of recommendations that I wanted to include in my application but I wanted to make sure they were all sent with my application. So I gave my professors a stamped self addressed envelope with a smaller envelope inside for them to place their recommendation into. I asked them to seal the smaller envelope and sign their name across the seal then place this in the large envelope and mail to me. I then sent the small unopened letter with my application. This proves the letter was never opened. Call your school and ask if they will send you the transcript in this way. If not you can always call the school to receive your transcript to make sure it arrived and made it into your file. 3. In my case I applied in August 2009, got accepted in Jan 2010 and started in late August 2010. So it was a full year from application to start date. In any case, no questions are stupid. Don't hesitate to call the schools you are interested in and ask these questions. Schools should be helpful in the application process. People who ask questions are the ones who are the smart ones. I am afraid of anyone who is too arrogant to admit they don't have all the answers, those are the people who are often wrong (and in the nursing profession---dangerous!) Good luck in your journey into becoming a nurse!!!

First time at clinicals
For my first clinical experience I felt the same way, but our instructors assured us that we would not be doing anything that could hurt the patient in any way. We did baths, vitals, and bed changing. I actually enjoyed myself after I got over the fear of going into a patients room.

Advice to nursing students from a hiring manager
I agree with the LPN route and the reasoning why one should take that path, but in my area LPN's have all been laid off and cannot find jobs either. LPN's are not marketable here. For myself, still a student, I am going to school attached to a teaching hospital. They make every effort to provide us with opportunities. For instance, the hospital hires CAs from only our school and as those CAs graduate they are hired into RN positions opening up CA positions to the incoming students. However, the two years working for the hospital as a CA is a 2 year interview. Do well and the CA will be in line for a position as an RN, do poorly and your out of luck. The hiring managers are actually fighting over the graduates of our school that proved themselves as a CA.

Interview
My interview went something like this: Tell us about you, who are you and why do you want to be a nurse. Don't give the pat answer "cause I want to help people", they hear that all the time..think deeper of why nursing is of interest to you. Why this school??? After I told them I was an artist, they wanted to know what from my background would be beneficial to nursing. They went over my pre req grades (mine were good so I was just commended) but they wanted to know if I understood the commitment nursing school took. The hours of studying, the long clinical days. The time away from family and friends. Did I have any relatives that were nurses? I have some friends whose grades were not good and they were grilled in this area on why not. They wanted to know my future education plans and what type of nurse did I want to be. (the program I was applying for was a diploma program, so I told them I wanted to be a NICU nurse and understood that a BSN was a minimum requirement and would proceed on to a specific university to obtain the BSN. I also let them know that I had all of my non nursing BSN credits completed. Let them know if you are interested in advancing your education, they like to hear that. I had to write a paragraph on a question they posed to me. Mine was: describe your code of ethics in relation to the classroom. They asked my level of support at home. (this is key for a lot of programs. I am not saying that if you are a single mom working full time that you can't do this. They just want to make sure you are strong enough mentally to get thru it and who do you have on your side?) They will ask you if you have any questions. You should always have at least one, but not too many....make sure it is not a question that can easily be answered on the schools web site. Dress business casual, do not bring your kids if you have any( i know, i know, sounds dumb, but some people ahead of me in the waiting area actually had their toddlers with them...not good at all. They think, If you can't get a sitter for the interview, what will you do during lectures and clinical?) It sounds like I was grilled on my interview, but really it was more like a casual conversation. Very relaxed and pleasant for me. Remember to relax and smile!!!! I hope I helped you. Good luck!!!

Now I'm worried about becoming a nurse
You know I am only in my first semester of NS. So far I have seen and dealt with a lot of poop and other body fluids. Somehow it doesn't bother me...I actually find joy in cleaning up those that cannot do it for themselves. So far I have had very nice patients who are grateful for the attention I give them. My fear is the day when I am a full fledge RN and do not have the time to devote to my patients basic care needs and when the responsibility for their entire care will fall on me with out my instructor or primary nurse to turn to. Will I still enjoy nursing then??? I worry....

I am Most Thankful For....
I am a student nurse and I am thankful for my family who support me when I have good days and bad days and remind me that I can do this and do it well. I am also so thankful for the people in my class. They are a fabulous bunch, each one of them, and I am grateful that we always have each others backs, and how I am happy to see each of their faces in class and clinical!!! And lastly I am thankful for my instructors and the nurses and CA's on my clinical floor. Each of them is patient and kind even and have made class and clinical a great positive experience.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You cannot change today, this day is over, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again tomorrow by learning what went wrong today.

Anyone else stressed?
Yes, I was stressed about the very same thing. However, I raised my kids and went back to school later in life....so I felt I was running out of time....and what if I didn't get into nursing school? I used this to my advantage. I kept reminding myself how much I wanted this. So when I felt like being lazy or that it was too much for me, I reminded myself that I would give it everything I had so if I didn't get in I had no regrets. That doesn't mean you have to have an A to feel good. If you gave it your all then that was all you could give. I worked my butt off and pushed myself harder than I ever have. When I went to my interview for nursing school they told me my chances for acceptance were good and not to worry. And my response? I worked very hard, gave it everything I had....and it was now out of my hands and I made myself relax. Guess what??? I got in on my first try.... So give it all you have and that is all you can do...things will fall into place. I like this quote, it kept me going and helped to keep my stress level down. Hope you like it too. The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop the people who don't want it badly enough. They are there to stop the other people! Randy Pausch

Nursing School vs. Family
Remember, you are also setting a wonderful example for your son. He is growing up watching a strong woman better herself further. This is a wonderful thing for a child to witness....that their mother is a responsible, determined, hardworking and driven woman. You go girl!! You are teaching your son by example, and he will grow up knowing what hard work is, that it pays off and he will also learn great respect for woman (an awesome thing for a male to have!).
