Taking the Hesi and Freaking out!!!!

Published

Hi All,

I am currently trying to get into nursing school and found the ideal school for me :) However they just told me yesterday that in order to get in the program I have to take the HESI....in TWO WEEKS!! I am freaking out and really in need of some extra study guides and helpful suggestions to help me pass this the first time around. Its very competitive and they only take the top 30 scorers into the program. Any material and suggestions that you all have would be so greatly appreciated!! Thanx in advance!!

Recommendations is spelled wrong in the link but use the live link on the post above. Really helped me!

MsAshley,

The best advice that I can give you are two keypoints: 1. study 2. don't stress

I know that you have not taken A&P, but try not to stress over it. Focus most of your study time on that section. Additionally, most study guides give you helpful hints for test day. The test isn't that bad overall. I didn't have to take the A&P section, but I scored in the 90's in every section except one, and that is because I scored a 100 in that section. I say that because my total study time was under a week.

Though the test is very broad in scope each section is pretty basic.

You sound really stressed and I feel bad for you. Just remember to relax. Stress can kill the scores of even the most prepared. While you are studying make sure you take a break once in awhile. Take a deep breath and picture yourself passing the test. : )

Howdy All :D

I am taking my HESI in 2 weeks!!!! Yea, Honestly I do feel REALLY PREPARED. I am taking the Math and Vocab and with the practice tests from my HESI book, I only missed 1 on the vocab.

My math is actually doing alot better than I thought. It really helped to go over the book, make note cards of steps, especially if you have issues with fractions (me) etc.

My question is for anybody is this? How exactly do we do the conversions? Like if we are go to go feet to yds ect, there has to be a way to get the answer. Like subtract, add or something like that. I have been looking ALL OVER and can not find anything to show me how to get from one conversion to another...

Thank You :nuke:

mm to inches = x .039

ml to oz = divide by 30

kg to lbs = x 2.2

tsp = 5 ml

2 Tbsp = 30 ml = 1 oz

All you really need to memorize is a few. Once you know how to get from standard to metric or vice versa you can figure the answer out. ex. if it asks how many inches in a meter you would first figure out inches to mm. From there you would figure out the mm to meters. Hope that helps! : )

There aren't that many conversions on the HESI. Mostly fractions, proportions and percentages. Some word problems as well. Most of them are multiple choice, but there are some fill in the blank math questions as well. I am totally math challenged -- studied and took the practice tests multiple times. If I got a question wrong, I did it again until I got the right answer. My problem is that I try to make math too hard. Once I learned to calm down and think about what I was doing, it came much easier. I actually got a 96% on math, so I am really happy. Make sure you know how many mL in an ounce, roman numerals and military time. There are several questions about those.

I had to take the chemistry and A&P as well. The A&P was harder for me, as I have only taken the first part of it in school, and there were some questions about things covered in A&P II. Chemistry was hard for me as well, but they were basic questions if you understand Chemistry. I got an 85 on A&P and an 80 in Chemistry. I would like to see what I got wrong on those, so I could study those areas more thoroughly.

The vocabulary and reading were easy for me, but I have always been pretty good at those subjects. Just make sure to go slowly and read the questions a couple of times. Make sure you know what there, their and they're are, and that you "lay" down.

Most important -- calm yourself down. Tell yourself that you have studied, and the rest is up to faith. Have faith in yourself, don't second guess -- you will be fine. It will be over and done with before you know it. Do the hard part before the test and learn the material.

I wish I had found this site before I took the HESI because I would have known what parts of chemistry and A&P to study!

Good luck!!!

P.S. Don't use the HESI study guide for A&P or Chemistry. Worthless. The math isn't that great either. Go to the link at the beginning of this thread. much more helpful.

Hiya Allea01,

Thank You for the AWSOME words of encouragement. I needed that. I am TOTALLY math challenged like you said that you are and that is where I have spent most of my time studying. But to be HOnest, I think I got it and I know I can't fail and I am pretty sure that I can do better than a 75% which is what we need to get into the program. I need to CALM DOWN and focus. That is the BIGGEST part of my problem.

I am so thankful that I found this site, it truly has helped me alot.

By chance do u remember how many ?'s there are in the Math portion?

I am taking A/P 2 this semester and Bio and Chem don't count for us for the test, but I still have to take a Chem Class----->Hmmm on that one!!

Thank you for the conversions also RB2000.

Have an AWSOME DAY :specs:

Thanks so much for the encouraging words and advice. I am trying to remain calm because I know that no one performs to the best of their ability when they are stressed. I have a little over a week left before the test so I am going to just try and study hard and everything should fall into place. Thanx again:yeah:

There were 50 math problems, and 25 each A&P and Chemistry. If you aren't taking that part, then the only things left are 50 each grammar, reading comprehension and vocabulary.

You are most welcome -- let us know how you do!

I meant to ask you before, are there any word problems in the math section? I see a ton of them on the practice test in the guide. I also see them asking questions about what system doesn't use decimals and so on. Will those be on there as well? Does the BIO section have 25 as well? Knowing that there arent a ton of questions does ease my mind a little bit but that also tells me it leaves a lot less room for error. Also I have heard some people say that they got to choose which sections they wanted to do first, second, and so on during the test is that true? if so I think that helps a lot too because you can do the sections that you know you are best at in order to compensate if you don't do as well in others. Thanks for all of the input you have posted so far :D

Yes, there are word questions on the math. They are pretty easy and if I remember right, they are multiple choice.

I didn't have to take the Biology part, but there are 25 questions in that as well. And I have been told to know your kingdoms, DNA/RNA, transcription, organelles, meiosis and meitosis.

And, yes -- you can take the test in any order you want. I saved math for last ...ironically, I did really well. We were not allowed calculators, so ask for several pieces of paper if you have to do them manually. That way you won't have to ask for more and disrupt your concentration.

WOW! I am reading all these posts and everyone's experience is so different. I find it weird that you can even take the HESI without taking A&P. My school is very strict and you cannot even register for the HESI without having Anatomy, Microbiology, Algebra, Pharmacology, and Physiology done first.

Our school only required the A&P, Math, and Reading along with 3 other tests which weren't officially scored like a critical thinking test which was modeled after NCLEX and other personality tests.

As others have said, the math was pretty basic. For me though, I had to really review my fractions and ratios and proportions! There were tons of those!

Good luck to you!
