Taking the Hesi and Freaking out!!!!

Published

Hi All,

I am currently trying to get into nursing school and found the ideal school for me :) However they just told me yesterday that in order to get in the program I have to take the HESI....in TWO WEEKS!! I am freaking out and really in need of some extra study guides and helpful suggestions to help me pass this the first time around. Its very competitive and they only take the top 30 scorers into the program. Any material and suggestions that you all have would be so greatly appreciated!! Thanx in advance!!

Thank YOu for the insight on the test Guys!!!! :D

Oh I forgot to ask, is the test timed? Do we get to use a chart for conversions?

I know my test is timed. They are giving us 4 hours to complete it. I doubt that they are giving us a conversion chart to use because so many people have told me to memorize my conversions and roman numerals. I have heard some people say they get to use a calculator while others say that they had to use scratch paper. I think it varies place to place.

Ok, thank you for the response. I appreciate it.

I go to school in Indiana and I am older than most applying---> 32 :) But I am older and wiser?? Hahahaha, it sounded good

Ours was a 4 hour test. We were supposed to start at 9am but there were so many people taking the test, 76 I believe, that they director had to take longer to explain all the rules. But she did say you get exactly 4 hours from the moment she let us begin. We were lucky to be able to use calculators. I can't imagine trying to do all that math without one. Some people were out of there within an hour. For me, I took a little over 2 hours.

I think it is best to take advantae of all the time that they give you to take the test. If they are giving me 4 hours I think I will probably use the whole four hours so that I can pace myself on the questions that I am having trouble with. Try to rationalize and come up with the best answer (I am thinking I will mostly have to do that with A&P and Chem) Hopefully we are allowed to take breaks though because I know sometimes I get a headache when I look at a screen for too long!!

Specializes in ED; Med Surg.

We were allowed to take breaks but we advised to finish a section before leaving, just in case it kicked you out. I was so glad, because even though I had visited the bathroom before the test (just like my mother used to tell me

 )...as soon as I got going on the test, my coffee and nerves decided to kick in. So I finished the section I was on, and took a bathroom break.

We were not allowed the use of calculators, but I have heard that some schools allow the computer calculator that just does basic math. I would have finished much more quickly if I had been able to use one...but I made sure not to hurry and to double check my answers. Most of the time I made a mistake while practicing was hurrying and carelessness...not reducing far enough, adding instead of subtracting, that sort of thing. So I made myself go slow and steady.

I am an older student returning to school after raising my kids, so I feel like this is my one chance...

Hiya allea01,

I'm in the same boat as you. I am an older student too----->32 and I have a 9 yr old daughter and I have been in school for awhile but really settled on nursing last spring and transferred to the school that I currently attend now for my ADN. I take my HESI next week and I think I am going to be fine, I've just got to get my confidence up and say "Hey, you've passed everything else that you need to be a nurse, now it's just this one little test." You Can Do It!!

Kudos to u for going back.

:yeah:

I just took it yesterday and rocked it. Im older, cough, cough, 42 and on my 4th career. Let us know how you did. I AM A NURSING STUDENT:yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

Congrats!! :anpom:Do you have any suggestions for me on what I need to focus on??I very seldom hear anyone on here say that they have failed which does ease my mind somewhat. However, when I was in the info session for the program they told me that they had a lot of people that did below the required 70%. I haven't taken A&P yet which is what scares me. Do you have any suggestions for me??

Know the basic med terminology

A/P you'll be fine if you have the Hesi prac book. Keep redoing that test.

Review Fractions and Decimals(least to greatest order)

Know your Fractions and all functions

Yes, know those stupid Roman Numerals(first time i actually understood it)

Yes, know those basic conversions from qts to oz especially

Review your basic grammar rules

If you have the Hesi Book, you should be fine.

I also practiced on some easy math sites that were suggested on this forum just to get my juices flowing with math again.

I started with math so my mind would be fresh .

Are you older also?

I studied 30-45 min a night for 2wks if that helps.

I have to take my drug test tomorrow! Onward!

No I'm not older. I am actually only 23 so you would think I wouldn't need much of a refresher on any of these things. I seem to be having the hardest time remembering the conversions although I just had to take a medical measurements class that went through all of this! I have never really did well with Roman Numerals so that is going to suck for me! :confused:I think I am mostly worried because I don't have any history with A&P. It now makes me wish I would have took it a looong time ago. At leas then now it would be a refresher course. With the reading and Vocab/Grammer I have been doing really well on the tests I am scoring about a 90 percent on the ones in the HESI guide. For the next week I think I am going to just focus on the sciences. I have been doing flash cards and finding tests online to help keep me fresh I hope all of that works!
