I work in a hospital and am going to nursing school. The docs that I work for are given allowances and one of my doctors has offered to purchase some books for me that I can use throught my education and career. Do you have any sugggestions on what might be good, tried and true reference materials/books to have? I will be entering nursing school in the fall. Thanks.

You should make a call to your nursing school and see what books they require and use the money to defray some of the costs of the actual texts you will need like Potter and Perry Fundamental of nursing or Medical Surgical nursing or whatever they list.
Beyond that -a good medical dictionary is a good investment
so in an assessment guide like Bates

Taber's Medical Dictionary, Davis' Drug Guide for Nurses, a good care plan book that covers all areas, not just med/surg

Whichever Fundamentals of Nursing textbook your program requires. I also like Mosby's Medical Dictionary (Of Medicine, Nursing And Health Professions). Maybe one of those pocket references for nurses, like RNotes.

I am going into my third semester of RN program. I use the potter and perry, med surge by Ignativious. And I have just discovered the made incredibly easy books. I always thought they may be a waste of time, but no, they are awesome!! They have virtually all subject. Here are some I am reading now over the summer:
DOSAGE CALCULATIONS MADE INCREDIBLY EASY
ASSESSMENT MADE INCREDIBLY EASY
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY MADE INCREDIBLY EASY
FLUIDS AND ELECTROLYTESMADE INCREDIBLY EASY
They are very helpful and you could find them at a used bookstore.:)

* Saunder's NCLEX-RN book
* Prentice Hall Reviews & Rationales NCLEX-RN (Hogan) - this is another great NCLEX book!
* Prentice Hall Reviews & Rationales: Fluids, Electrolytes & Acid-Base Balance (Hogan) - probably the best F&E book I have ever read!
* Taber's Medical Dictionary
* RNotes pocket guide (I love this thing for clinical - it was a requirement at my school)
* A good lab book - I like Mosby's Diagnostic and Laboratory Test Results book
* My favorite critical care nursing resource is called Manual of Critical Care Nursing - EXCELLENT and easy to read and understand. It hits on all of the main/important points.

I found the textbook to be enough for fluids & electrolytes.
Taber's medical dictionary is such baloney, because the info you need on the diseases is on the class textbook.
RNotes pocket guide-- that is so so, I have it because I was scared of clinicals, and I think I used it only once--
the best one to have is saunder's review for nclex.
and if you have the $ get the reviews and rationales series for the specialty subjects like peds, ob, psych
