I think I'm done answering student nurse help me threads here.
I've gotten rude answers, or they never even bother coming back to the thread to acknowledge the answers they received.
Some will ask life choice questions like "Where should I move?" or "Where should I apply?". Do they think someone is going to offer them a job here, is that why they start these threads? You have the whole internet to research towns, cities, regions, but instead you post a thread asking a bunch of strangers where you should move?
Some help me threads seem to be 'Help me do my homework' threads.
Thank you for reading.
Maybe I should look for a sign of engagement before offering help (longevity on AN? Track record of previous posts?)
Not a bad idea. I really like having a student with me at work, especially if they are are engaged. They don't have to know everything (I certainly don't!) but they have to be willing to look for the stuff they don't know--the best students do.
However, it's becoming a bit of a pet peeve for me for a student to come on here and start with "Help! I'm doing a care plan. My pt is admitted with CHF. What nursing diagnosis do I use????"
I hear you! The rude answers bother me the most. If someone takes the time to try to help you out, why would you then send them a nasty reply telling them they're wrong, old, burned out or mean?
Any why do some students insist on beating around the bush?? Burt out? No! Nurses eat their young. Period. That is all it boils down to. When a student is corrected or a veteran nurse on here refuses to do their homework--proof of that happening.
Well, I am guilty of posting a nonsense thread. Sorry...
It was a "I want to get my licenses as a radiation therapist and then second degree in nursing, what do you think?" Fortunately no one responded. Thanks, because of that I had to do my on soul searching and you know what I did neither. I got my BS in Biology and am now pursuing graduate studies in Cancer Biology.
Still, I come here and look up things that I want to understand more about, sometimes searching on the internet and reading primary research papers brings to light something I need to understand from a medical persperctive. This site has been helpful. I know it is frustrating, but please know that even if the orignal poster does not appreciate your knowledge there are some of us lurkers who do. Thanks for all that you do, it is a help.
I think that there is a huge difference between being realistic and being so brash that it is intended to cause harm and humiliation to the other party. Being honest requires a great deal of tact to get the message across. I'm seeing a lot of responses to the OP that border on snarky, and dare I say, unprofessional. Get it together, please. The younger generation of nurses aren't nearly as bad as you're making them out to be.
As long as we're on the subject......why is it if you even suggest that perhaps they WON'T pass the NCLEX (after failing multiple times).....or they might not be ready for this type of work when they balk at working weekends or nights or weekends......or that it's unrealistic to hold out for perfect hours/perfect pay when the job market is so tight......you're just "stomping on their dreams"? How is it so black and white: sunshine and sprinkles=good post.....constructive criticism or failure to agree to position presented=bad, "unsupportive" post.It isn't pessimistic, it isn't "mean"; reality is a check that sometimes you've just GOTTA cash, people.
And then all of us mean, dream stomping Old Bats are invited NOT to participate in their thread. Gotta love it!
You say "Nurses eat their young. Period. This is all it boils down to." Am I to understand that you abide by, and personally feel, that the "nurses eat their young" mentality is acceptable?
No. Just my guess, but I think the poster was being sarcastic. It seems that frequently, if someone remotely criticizes or speaks bluntly/plainly, people come running with torches and pitchforks screaming, "NETY, NETY, NETY!"

My favorite so far is "Does anyone have a PICOT paper I can use for my class?" Really?? Are you going to going to ask one of us to take the NCLEX for you too?
