Student Nurse "Help me!" Threads

Published

I think I'm done answering student nurse help me threads here.

I've gotten rude answers, or they never even bother coming back to the thread to acknowledge the answers they received.

Some will ask life choice questions like "Where should I move?" or "Where should I apply?". Do they think someone is going to offer them a job here, is that why they start these threads? You have the whole internet to research towns, cities, regions, but instead you post a thread asking a bunch of strangers where you should move?

Some help me threads seem to be 'Help me do my homework' threads.

Thank you for reading.

OK, here goes my first comment. I am not a nurse or LPN, but I am a CNA. I got my certification in South Carolina. I am Canadian but married an American citizen and lived there for 4 years and got my certification. I have moved back to Canada, BC to be specific and they will not recognize my certification. I have a years experience in LTC/Rehab. I love my job and am so disappointed that I cannot use my education here. Has anyone else had this experience and what did you do? Please don't tell me you redid the course, I refuse to give the BC government my hard earned money(working at Walmart and EA at schools). Do all of the Provinces have this policy? I would appreciate any and all comments.

Thank you in advance.

Careful saying "nurse or LPN". It tends to rile up us LPNs :)

The "good pop up" threads are numerous and should all just get shoved away in their own special hidden thread somewhere. But my newest peeve is the "I'm a new ER/OR/Paeds/L&D/insert-every-specialty-here Nurse! Yay! What should I know/do/try to learn, give me advice" threads that are posted one after the other. Use the flipping search option first!!!

/rant

Or when their first sentence is "I know there are other threads just like this one but my situation is a little different......"

And their situation is the same as the threads before them! Your not the first RN in (insert specialty here) that has been a pct/CNA/medic/stripper whatever...

where is the critical thinking?!

Thank you Brandon because I was about to say....LPN = Licensed Practical NURSE or LVN = Licensed Vocational NURSE.

The threads that hit a nerve with me are the ones that go along the lines of ...

"What is the bare minimum that I have to do to ....?"

"Which specialty involves the least work, least stres, but has the most pay, easiest schedule, etc.? ..."

"How can I achive without having to put forth a minimal amount of effort.?"

I think you get my point. Sometimes, it actually offends me that people think they should be able to waltz to the top of our profession without investing any effort.

You're just bitter and jealous. :)

My, my, my! This venting thread has deteriorated into name calling and (*gasp*) spell-checking. Maybe we can all take a deep breath before someone invokes Godwin's Law.

I love the threads that say "nurses eat their young" if we ask them to show what research they have done prior to us helping them. I also love the ones that will complain and play victim for a "write up" at work yet from previous posts it's not the first time they have "vented" about being written up. Maybe some posters don't realize we can see all previous posts from them. Sometimes I read them for entertainment:) oh and another favorite is how autocorrect makes spelling errors, because proof reading is really hard and time consuming. Haha!!

I'm so loving this thread. I've thought about a lot of the points posted here and thought it was just me who thought this way. So glad to see I'm not the only one. I thought I was being my usual crunchy self.

Just think where your careers might have taken you with the information now available for our prenursing and nursing students. Brian's vision is to SHARE our collective knowledge and wisdom.

After 14years at allnurses, I just skip over sections that don't interest me and focus on my passion areas. I'm sure students get tired of hearing our established members repetitive laments too. I remember the excitement and passion that nursing school instilled in me and keep it alive by attending yearly conferences on my own dime, along with attending AACN's NTI as allnurses exibitor talking with thousands of RN's yearly..

We do have a responsibility to set standards to maintain and promote our profession, but not at the cost of stifling our young. I remember my grand mother talking about learning to cook in a microwave 75 years after learning to cook in a hearth: time changes and you have to learn to adapt.

AN walks a fine line supporting our established members while creating the next generation of nurses who will stay and grow in depth of nursing knowledge becoming the next " crusty old bat society" RN's.

I realize I am probably raining on the parade you guys are having here, and that you are just having some fun with the real issue of repetitiveness and even stupidity of some posts. But- try to remember there are those of us who do put in the work and need a little guidance or advice sometimes. It can be daunting to ask for it. But we contribute too. I asked for advice on a nursing theory paper last term. I got some good advice, so tried to give back by "publishing" my paper here for others to read. I would hope those with experience continue to offer their wisdom to those of us at the start of our journey. We will one day soon be your colleagues.

As a pre nursing student I look at these threads. I was reading one the other day and I thanked Esme and GrnTea for how helpful they are because those threads have helped me. I may just be lurking that day and reading up on what is going on and those two especially are preparing me for nursing school. They are helping me learn how to think like a nurse and how to do care plans. I really appreciate them and the people who take the time to respond to them. I know there are a lot of pointless topics started on here, but you have no idea who they may be helping. It may not just be the OP.

If it annoys you, then don't go into the student area. It's that simple.

It's actually an old joke, Retired APRN. ;)

I too have enjoyed this rant but I agree with some of the other students about "lurking" and learning. I have learned from I believe Esme that preload and a toilet flushing can be very similar. On posts that I have started, some have taken on a life of their own like the toddler who died during a root canal. I have also used the search option to try to find a particular post that, of course at the time, I didn't bookmark (my fault). Try as I might, I can NOT find the post that pertained to interview questions she had recently. That post was great but taught me that bookmarking a post is a must. I have really appreciated all the answers some people get and, although the original poster may not come back to say thank you, I hope you know that your responses are appreciated by some of us!
