Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

Hello Baby.catcher,

Congratulations also!!! Actually the scholarship thing to me was just a miracle!!! I was fortunate to see that mail sent to me 3dys prior to the due date, and when i read the paragraph that says " Knowles fellowship awards will be granted each year to one incoming ABSN student" at that point I smiled and said to myself it sound like playing lottery now. But then I said jokingly again to myself, you never know and it wont hurt to apply just to fulfill all righteousness. And to my surprise yesterday, I reluctantly opened the mail only to find out, not only was I accepted but also offered d scholarship.

Anyway, am yet to decide what am going to do, as I still have Stony Brook as my preference. But in any event, I will try to find the MGH thread, and maybe I will then be able to make a final decision. Because I live in NY, and really dont know anything about Boston area, nor don I know anyone in the MGH program. Although the online information about the program is very impressive, and when I called sometimes to find out if I could apply to the MSN program at the same time, the person who picked up the phone was too nice, and I really do appreciate the way my concerns were dealt with. I mean you can feel on the other end of the phone that this person is actually connecting with you, and not just the usual 2sec robotic information. So I felt like its going to be a non hostile environment, so maybe reading from the MGH thread also will help me make a decision.

Marinoh, if you want more information, you should find the 2010 forum for MGH!

Baby.catcher,

Thanks, will sure do.

I will try to search for the thread discussing MGH now, and I would take it from there, but in the meantime, If you were in my shoes, and you also got accepted into SUB, what would you do.Lol!!

Unfortunately, cost of attendance is a major factor when it comes to my education decisions. At this point in time, with past student loans still looming overhead, I am trying not to add too much to that total so whatever I can do to keep it down will help. Full scholarship trumps state tuition any day. Well, not with just any school of course, but for a school like MGH on one side and SBU on the other, MGH for me wins hands down!

okay i am checking solar too much. paco- help!

I am assuming that this is for the 12-month accelerated program, right?

I am hoping to apply to this program next year.

How many chemistry classes are required? Two? I recall it was Chemistry, Microbiology, and Anatomy & Physiology. I took Biology 101 in my first year at Boston University (I was a Speech Pathology major) so I am guessing that counts as one of these prereqs. Any ideas?

Thank you kindly :)

This is for the 12-month program, yes!

The prereqs for SBU are Micro, A&P 1 & 2, Chem I, and EITHER Chem II OR another science (Biology, Genetics, or Physics). They specify "another science" on the website, and use those 3 in the parentheses as their examples, so I assume yet another science (i.e., Biochem?) would be OK as well. So if you took Bio 101 all you need is Chem I. The prereqs are pretty straightforward and simple, unlike other schools that want psych, stats and nutrition too. Although I understand nutrition is one of the courses IN the SBU curriculum and I am hoping to waive it since I took it already (I know I asked that question before in this thread but I forgot the answer).

Hey Paco,

Thanks a bunch for sharing your sincere opinion with me, I do appreciate it. I will go ahead with MGH then, but its unfortunate we may not be classmates anymore. But then we can always stay in touch with this thread, you have been so nice to everyone so far. Reading through the posts, I can tell what type of personality makes you up. Anyway, thanks and will keep you posted with my final decisions. But in the meantime, i wish you good luck with stony brook, I pray it works out for you real good.

Thanks so much! :p That is very kind of you. I try to help as many people as I can. Good luck with MGH and I would love to hear how that will work out for you. Boston is an awesome city as you will see, and MGH is one of the best hospitals in the region if not the country. They are in the forefront of many specialties, so do rememeber that you are quite privileged to be a part of it! Keep in touch!

Hi everyone-

Maybe someone out here can answer this question for me..... IF accepted to the accelerated program, do I need to have all 3 of my humanities completed before program begins? I have a BS in business , but all my humanities dont meet their criteria, so i m taking 2 of them this semester. If i didnt need to, i would just as well drop and get refund. Thanks.

Hi bern69,

From what Stony Brook's website says, you only need A&P I & II, Chemistry I, Chemistry II or another science and microbiology for the accelerated program. All the other prereq's that include humanities are for the basic 2 year program. You might want to double check with the school before you drop any courses though. Good luck.

Adding to chele's answer, the fact that you have a BA/BS prior to entering the accelerated program means that you have implicitly met those humanities/social science prereq courses needed for the 2-year program. You just need to worry about the natural sciences indicated above.

Thank you both for your quick responses. I registered for the xtra humanities as a back up 2 year plan...Hoping for the 1 year program like you both. Hopefully we find out oa acceptance/denial before next semester resumes.
