Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

hi everyone!

i'm an applicant to stony brook's 1-year accelerated program that has been lurking creepily on this thread for the past couple of weeks (no seriously, lately, as soon as i get home from work, there's 3 things i do: check SOLAR, check my email, and then check this thread ;) ), and finally decided to make an account and join in :D

good luck to everyone...i know we will all end up exactly where we need to be!

Personally, I think you're checking all those things in the wrong order! :D This thread should ALWAYS be first! Because you know you're going to hear stuff here first before anything. That's how we roll, lol!! Welcome to the thread, alex_mack12!

with this snowstorm, it's gonna just drag out the waiting process even longer!!

Now I see why they call you TROUBLE! :lol2: :lol2:

I guess I can see where you're coming from given that you're looking out the window at all that snow. It's hard for me to feel that way given that I live somewhere that does not have snow and it's out of sight and out of mind (not bragging by any means, just stating a fact, and BTW I have lived through my share of blizzards up north!! :D). That said, I am not trying to make any assumptions here. For all we know ALL the decisions have been made and they just have to print out letters, etc. For all we know the admission committee members are reviewing files remotely from home. I like to think positively :) Decisions will come eventually!

hey paco,

Am just a bit curious, your current status reflects accepted 1, but declined offer. So what school gave the offer, and why did you decline, if I may ask.

Hey paco,

Am going to bother you again and i hope you don't mind, since I know you are really well informed regarding this nursing programs stuff. I do envy you for that though Lol!!! Anyway, I just opened my mail box and found another acceptance letter from MGH Institute of health profession, and the sweet part of the story is I was offered a full tuition scholarship. But I really don't know much about this program, and also a non refundable fee is due by Jan 28th, so what do you think. Please give me some advice as a future colleague, as I am still much interested in going to stony brook. Thanks for your usual assistance.

hey paco,

Am just a bit curious, your current status reflects accepted 1, but declined offer. So what school gave the offer, and why did you decline, if I may ask.

I was accepted to Drexel in Philadelphia, their accelerated program for this spring. I declined because (1) there was no way I could start the program then (I would be in school now as we speak and I had to keep working) - although I was going to defer to the Fall and they were going to let me do that, but (2) my unmet financial need was outrageously expensive AND no opportunities for scholarships. So I decided to pursue more cost effective options. I realize I will have to incur some loans for nursing school, but not to that extent when I can go to a less expensive school. There used to be a full scholarship offered through the UPenn hospital system but I learned from the hospital itself that it was discontinued for the time being.

Talk about ENVY!!!! Are you kidding me? I am envious of YOU! :ancong!:

If it were me, it would be a no brainer. That's where I would go. Boston is an excellent city to go study nursing. Now I am almost sorry I did not apply to MGH, as I really did toy with the decision. Aw, that's GREAT!! I don't know too much about the school from other people but I am impressed with what I have read about them online. Have you searched out other threads on here that discuss MGH? I would bank on the fact that there are many. How much is the deposit they require? If you can swing the cost, pay the deposit and then see what Stony Brook says. At least you have a sure thing in case SBU falls through. Then again, you might hear something before MGH deadline anyway. This is where SOLAR checking will come in handy.

Don't miss it tonight ... it's going to dip into the 20's! I'm so ready to go back to NY it's not even funny. I am a tried and true New Yawkah!! :D

I went to the MGH website and now remembered why I did not bother applying there. They require all prereqs within 5 years, of which my stats and chem are not PLUS it says the chem should include "some" organic chem, which I believe my course did not cover at all. I noticed that I could have filed for a waiver of that 5 year requirement but I could not think of a cogent reason for doing that. I have already taken chem TWICE in my lifetime, I'm just not about to go through it a 3rd time.

Still, sounds like a very good program!

Marinoh, omgosh, I am soo envious of you right now. I just got my acceptance letter at MGHI as well, and I was thinking back to when I received that scholarship e-mail with the application. By the time I actually found the e-mail, the application date had already past, and I kicked myself for that!! Oh well. I probably could not have competed. Please do update us if you will be going to that school, and you should visit the MGH ABSN forum!! Congratulations on the scholarship, and maybe I will see you at MGHI!! :)

Hey paco,

Thanks for your quick response, I really do appreciate it, and thanks for the acknowledgment of my acceptance into the program. Now I see why you turned down the Drexel offer, I also wont have considered a spring offer at this point in time. Anyway regarding MGH, the deposit is $500, and its due by Jan 28th. As per the prereqs within 5years, I also had a similar problem with Chemistry, as its 10yrs since I obtained my first degree. But i just completed a graduate program May 2010, so i requested for a waiver based on the fact that I took Advanced Biochemistry course during the graduate program. Also as at the time of application, I had outstanding prereq in Nutrition, which am still working on, since its online program. So am positive they could have waived it for you, if you had applied.

Re- the envy issue, actually what I was trying to say was i had no idea about ABSN-program, someone just mentioned it at my place of work in Sept and I went online to search. So I just did all my applications blindly without no consult or assistance. So I was really amazed to storm across this forum in Dec, after the deadlines, only to discover how much information flying all over and I just felt sorry for myself at that point.

I mean its a very nice forum, and am glad I found it, and thanks to people like you who always take time to attend to other peoples concern.

I will try to search for the thread discussing MGH now, and I would take it from there, but in the meantime, If you were in my shoes, and you also got accepted into SUB, what would you do.Lol!!

Hello Baby.catcher,

Congratulations also!!! Actually the scholarship thing to me was just a miracle!!! I was fortunate to see that mail sent to me 3dys prior to the due date, and when i read the paragraph that says " Knowles fellowship awards will be granted each year to one incoming ABSN student" at that point I smiled and said to myself it sound like playing lottery now. But then I said jokingly again to myself, you never know and it wont hurt to apply just to fulfill all righteousness. And to my surprise yesterday, I reluctantly opened the mail only to find out, not only was I accepted but also offered d scholarship.

Anyway, am yet to decide what am going to do, as I still have Stony Brook as my preference. But in any event, I will try to find the MGH thread, and maybe I will then be able to make a final decision. Because I live in NY, and really dont know anything about Boston area, nor don I know anyone in the MGH program. Although the online information about the program is very impressive, and when I called sometimes to find out if I could apply to the MSN program at the same time, the person who picked up the phone was too nice, and I really do appreciate the way my concerns were dealt with. I mean you can feel on the other end of the phone that this person is actually connecting with you, and not just the usual 2sec robotic information. So I felt like its going to be a non hostile environment, so maybe reading from the MGH thread also will help me make a decision.
