ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ...
but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).
anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?
Thanks Paco- I have read all of the past posts/threads but I am looking for more specifics...guess I will just have to wait- we should know soon enough!! I am trying not to focus on the waiting since being so busy getting ready for the holidays, but it is always in the back of my mind...
Does anyone know of someone being contacted for an interview from past years?
Hello, Anniet828! Welcome to the thread. I have a liberal arts background... I'm pretty scared because I don't feel like I'm a very competitive applicant... YET! I'm hoping to get into a school on my first round of applications... but if not I'll app again next year. Most of my prereqs will be done by then, I'm tossing up getting EMT or CNA (or both!) certified in the future.Paco, I'm taking nutrition online as it is a prereq for some other programs I'm applying to... let me know if you hear an answer on that question! I would think/hope that nutrition is a general enough class that it should transfer as long as its from an accredited university.
It's a little annoying that each nursing school has different prereqs... but I guess each nursing program varies in length so the courses they cover are different... sorry I'm just thinking "out loud".
Hi omw2help,
Liberal arts is good though- you can take that in any direction. I am worried since my last degrees were in Fashion Design and International Trade...so I feel like my undergrad is not a help at all even with a decent GPA. I did complete the prereqs with a strong GPA, but have absolutely no experience in the medical/healthcare field. I had a successful career in fashion, but I am not sure that is beneficial in any way for these purposes...
The prereqs being different is frustrating...EMT and or CNA sounds like a great idea and I am sure that experience/training will be helpful in nursing school too!
A few questions--
1. when do we hear back?
2. will I NOT get accepted if I'm not taking anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 until next semester (not because all prereqs are required... because I know they let you have 2 prereqs slide, but because these are, well, important prereq)
3. will I be rejected with an undergraduate GPA of 3.22?

ahs760,
these are all questions that we would all love to know, but unfortunately dont have the asnwers to. The only thing that I sort of know is that we MIGHT hear back mid jan.
we are all uncertain together! cheers to that!
Hey All-I am currently in the ASBN program...Email me if you want any information regarding the program...If I don't get back to you before Wednesday I am sorry...I have a Pharm test!!! Good Luck everyone!
Hi,
Hope you did well on your test!! Thanks for taking a minute to give your input. Seems like most of the comments from others who are in the program (now or past years) find it tough but doable and overall like it...I am trying to get a better idea of the weekly schedule in summer and fall- so far what has it been like? Also, how many hours on average would you say are needed outside of classes for study/clinicals?
Thanks again!
1. when do we hear back? i heard back in january. it seems like they did rounds for sounding out letters. most of my friends didn't hear until march/april and one of my friends got in the day the program started.
2. will i not get accepted if i'm not taking anatomy and physiology 1 and 2 until next semester (not because all prereqs are required... because i know they let you have 2 prereqs slide, but because these are, well, important prereq) i truthfully don't know this answer, i did have ap 1 & 2 but didn't have chemistry and got in. i think it depends if you are a strong candidate.
3. will i be rejected with an undergraduate gpa of 3.22?this depends as well, do you have any have a strong resume with activities on it? for my first degree my gpa was 3.33. for my prereq science courses i have a 4.0.
4. the summer from looking back is not so bad. for me, it was monday - thursday class, which was i believe from 8 - 3 or 4ish and a clinical day on friday; most ppl will have their clinical though on the weekends. the fall is totally different from the summer there is a lot more studying and paper work. in the fall you take, ob, peds, psych, pathology, pharmacology, research. ob and peds are split the first 6 weeks you will be in one and then switch. pharm and path don't start until mid-november. psych was a challenging course because of the amount of paperwork that you need to do. i had class, monday, wednesday and friday and clinicals on tuesday and thursday.
5. clinicals are 12 hours with the exception of psych which is 8 hours.
6. studying takes up most of your free time, but if you plan well you will still be able to have fun, maybe not in the same capacity as you did before the program but you will still be able to do this. studying also depends on the type of person you are, i study a lot whereas my friend doesn't have to study a lot!

Lots of info on this thread, we are all eagerly awaiting word on our applications. We don't anticipate hearing anything until January, so hang tight and just drown your worries in holiday egg nog (or in my case, wine works nicely *wine).
