Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

nitabita- What a great surprise! Congrats for your boyfriend, hopefully we'll all be there with him soon! :yeah:

SBUSN11- I am scheduled for my BLS certification soon, I am waiting to submit my 2 year application so the certification isn't pending, do you think that will make it look stronger or should I not wait. Also I was a little confused by your response in regards to how soon you had to accept your acceptance. I am applying to both programs and am very torn on which one would be best because I have a feeling if I get into the accelerated its on my letters of recommendation mostly and the connections I have made with the dean of the nursing school and the other faculty I work with currently at SBUH. If I get in I am afraid to set myself up for something I may not be able to handle and I feel liek I would need more than 5 days to think about it. I assume, if I get into the 1 year I will probably get into the 2 year since it is a little less competitive but wont know for sure until March and don't want to deny the 1 year and then possibly not get into the 2 year. Any thoughts/clarification on how soon you had to notify the school that you would/wouldn't be accepting the admission?

Hope everyone had a great holday! Hopefully good news rolls our way in the upcoming holidays!

Hmm, I thought the 2-year was more competitive than the accelerated, that's interesting. I got my BLS certification earlier this year, not that I planned to do it to make my application stand out, I just had the time to get it done. But it was nice to put it down on my application as something I already had. So, it can't hurt to be seen as an advantage.

If we have to decide on an offer within 5 days and not give a deposit until April (which is the way I understood this), then it works out well in terms of my other school decisions coming through. Stony Brook is my top choice so accepting an offer is a no-brainer for me, but unfortunately finances will have a say on whether I can actually go. We shall see!

Does anyone happen to know the number of clinical rotation hours for the ABSN program?

I met with *********** hes a friend of my mothers and he is like on the board of admissions or something along those lines of the nursing program. When I showed him my transcripts he said to make sure I apply to both because it will increase my chances because the accelerated is so competitive. They get roughly 500 applicants and take 60 give or take a few. The two year is a little less competitive for a number of reasons I think, one being that most people want to get it done with and the accelerated fast-track route is more appealing, and two because the standards are slightly lower, hence why the g.p.a minimum is lower than that of the accelerated. And if you get in to the program and it really is your first choice I would definetly look into financial aid or whatever help they offer. The people here are so welcoming and really want to do whatever they can to help their prospective students. They even got me my BLS certification for free which is regularly I believe $60 or so to get? either way best of luck I'm sure you'll be hearing good news over the next few weeks!

kristenann110: when i went to an informational meeting they stated that we should wait to obtain the bls certificate until we were accepted into the program. the faculty member stated that it was better not to waste money. i had five days to accept. however, i am pretty sure that you can easily drop with program without penalty... it is my understanding that once you are accepted to the 1 year program they will take you out of the running for the 2 year.( i am not positive of this, but have heard it from my peers. i did not pay attention to the two year program as i was intent on 1 year.) i would recommend calling the school of nursing to discuss your dilemma. sorry i could not be of more help...

No thank you for all your help! I took the BLS because my internship at SBUH got me into the class for free so I was just wondering if I should wait to put in my 2 year application until it was completed. I passed now so I guess alls well that ends well and I will just have to sit tight for another month to wait on the letter :uhoh3:

Don't count on it, at all! Stony Brook is not going to notify anyone until at least mid January! No use ruining your holidays over the unknown. Forget about SOLAR until the first week of January at the earliest. Personally, I am not going to even bother checking SOLAR until at least 2 people come on here and post that they got news :D.

bah, humbug! :)

I have to admit my heart skips a little bit every time I see someone has added a new post to this thread! :p I just told my dear bf that I feel like a rocket. I'm fueled up, loaded, target set, ignition started and fires blazing with anticipation... but I'm not allowed to launch!!!
