Stony Brook BSN - Summer/Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

ok, it's never too early to start a thread about applying for 2011 ... :D ... which i am most definitely doing even though i am still waitlisted for 2010. i just won't be able to attend this year if i get in ... :(

but that's ok! i'll be done with all my prereqs and have time to write a better application (if in fact that is at all possible, you know?).

anyone else applying to stony brook for summer 2011?

Hi all!

Kristenann110: I received my acceptance letter on January 11. (I had an idea that I had been accepted about a week before that because the new students tab appeared on my solar)

I do know people in the two year program…After the first semester, the 2 yrs and 1 yrs are combined in a majority of the classes. They definitely have a lot more free time than the 1 yrs. Another benefit of the 2 yr program is that they have more clinical experience. Additionally, many of them have time to work as which also adds to their clinical knowledge.

With that said, I would still recommend the 1 yr program. It is definitely intense but it is doable. Over the summer, you will have plenty of time to hang out with your friends and family. The fall semester is proving to be a bit more intense. Though pediatrics and Ob are not particularly difficult, the professors have assigned a lot of “busy work”…However, at least one day a week, I have had time to hang out with friends. I am anxious to get into the field, so it has been worth it for me. The time is flying by and I know I will have plenty of free time when it is all over!

Paco69: Sorry!!! I would have loved to have had you as a classmate. Speaking of the waitlist, you should definitely not give up hope. On the first day of orientation, 6 students did not show up. They ended up calling in 6 new students that day. Also, we have heard that they definitely pay special attention to those who are applying for a second time. As I stated above, we are busy but it is not as bad as everyone has said. I truly thought I would have nooo life this year and that has not been the case… Though, the holidays have definitely allowed for some more free time.

Clinical: At the beginning of the year, students are given the opportunity to apply for the Stony Brook 24. Students in this group must be from Suffolk County and have in interest in working at SBUMC. Those excepted into the stony brook 24 will complete all clinical at SBUMC. All other students are able to make requests from the list of clinical sites for each class; the professors do their best to accommodate these requests.

All of the fundamentals clinicals in the first semester take place at SBUMC. There are seven 12 hr shifts which take place on general med surg floors. During fundamentals clinical you will have the opportunity to give bed baths, take vitals, and administer medication with your clinical professor. If the opportunity arises, you may also get to insert a foley catheter, provide wound care, suction a patient or place a naso-gastric tube(the clinical professor will be with you to guide you through any of these procedures).

Fall semester: There is clinical for OB, Psych and Pediatrics.

Psychology clinical: These clinical take place at SBUMC on the inpatient psychiatric floor, Mary Haven in Riverhead, Northport VA Pederson Krag and Mather hospital. During these clinical, you have the chance to perform mental status exams and interview patients. In certain locations, you may also have an opportunity to lead group therapy sessions.

OB: A majority of the clinical take place at SBUMC. I think there are one or two clinical groups at St. Charles. During this clinical you will have the opportunity to spend time on the post-partum floor, labor and delivery, the newborn nursery and the NICU. (while in the Labor and Delivery and the NICU you will mainly be observing) On the post partum floor you will be performing assessments on the mother and baby, assisting the mother in breastfeeding, and administering medication. In the newborn nursery you will check the babies’ vitals, change diapers, feed those who are not breastfeeding, and assist the nurses in assessing new admissions.

Pediatrics:Again, a majority of the clinical take place at SBUMC. There were also two groups at Good Samaritan hospital. During clinical students were also given an opportunity to observe in the Pediatric Oncology Unit and the PICU. We were able to perform assessments, administer meds and take vitals.

Housing: I really can’t answer your housing question. I live in the area so I did not look into anything related to housing. A few of the students expressed fears of living in the dorms because we need our sleep! A majority of the students are either renting houses or live nearby. (I think renting is actually cheaper than living in the dorms but I am not sure)

Dr3amygirl: I think I have answered your questions above…wow, that looks like a mini essay!

Hope this helps you all…and let me know if I left anything out. Good luck!! You only have a little over a month until you find out!!

SBUSN11, thanks so much for your comprehensive posting above ... it certainly was helpful to get that student perspective as to what to expect once we are students there too, hopefully! That last minute calling from the waitlist would never work for me since I am out of state, how does one uproot one's life with such notice? I mean, really. Nice to know about the re-applicant special attention, that would be nice. Still was compelled to submit a stronger application this year. It's late and I cannot think of more questions, but I will write again when I do! Good luck as you progress towards a degree.

Thank you so much SBUSN11!! yesss thats alot of information and its really helpful!! =D

speaking of special attention, do you think they give priority to stony brook alumni? i mean, is there alot of people who were previously in stony for their undergrad in your class? i was hoping they give alumni special attention too :crying2:

Happy Thanksgiving to my Stony Brook thread friends :D ... have a bountiful and blessed day!

:hrnsmlys:

nitabita- Keep those fingers crossed for you and your bf :). I live in NY.

SBUSN11- Thanks for the post! Do you think it is necessary to have a car when it comes to clinicals? Or do alot of students car pool or take public transportation? Just to be clear, are there any clinicals sites available outside of LI?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

Dr3amygirl: During orientation our professor had all of those who were stony brook alumni raise their hands. A majority of the class did. Perhaps that is a good sign!

zee09: I would recommend getting a car...but if you really want to the save money you can make it work. A few students seemed to be fine without cars. As far as i know there are no clinical sites outside of LI. However, you may be able complete your capstone in the city. (I am not positive)

Hope you all enjoyed your thanksgiving!!:)

Hey thanks so much for all of your info! Much appreciated. How much time did you have to accept your space after you got your acceptance letter? I'm applying to a bunch of 3-yr programs for nurse-midwifery (SB is the only BSN-only program i've applied to, but I am really interested in going there even if it changes my progression to CNM a good deal) and i know they don't send acceptance letters until march or so.

Happy Thanksgiving!

SBUSN11- I figured having a car would be easier on the island, thanks.

I had 5 days

YIKES ...

That's not enough time to know one's financial aid awards and stuff. I can't recall, did one have to give a deposit when one accepts?
