I agree, I ended up at OHSU after taking all of my pre-reqs at a local community college in the rural northeastern part of the country. There were no questions about quality/content. Good luck!

I'm in the school of nursing at OHSU and I have been told that at OHSU, if someone were to stay on for the DNP portion of study (currently offered, not required), the student is required to pick an area in which to focus for their additional study; examples suggested to me were ultrasound, long-term management of abnormal paps, C-section first assist, providing surgical abortion, etc. Selecting your study field would be contingent upon having a preceptor that would be willing to work with you during your DNP terms. So, to answer your question, I think you *could learn surgical abortion at that program, because CNMs can legally provide surgical abortions in OR and it could be the additional scope of practice you hoped to gain competency in during your DNP year. However, aspiration abortion is not included in the Master's level CNM program at OHSU.

Hello! The time is approaching when I have to decide whether to pursue the NHSC Scholarship for my two yrs of MN/Midwifery study. I am going back and forth, partly due to the lack of available info, and I'm wondering if there are any CNM NHSC scholars out there who might be able to answer a few questions. I had almost all of my prereqs in process when I applied, except for A&P and Statistics, and I got in. I don't think it matters.

regarding loan payment -- there are many different programs for loan repayment. one involves total forgiveness of loans if you've done 120 consecutive payments AND worked for 10 yrs (get it?) in public service of some kind. but if you check out the options on the national health service corps website (NHSC, which is affiliated with HRSA), there are jobs listed where for two years of work at an approved site, you get $60,000 of loan forgiveness (federal or private bank loans), with additional awards for sequential years. there are other options, but the NHSC one is the most commonly discussed option (i say discussed cause i'm currently racking up all of my debt at OHSU in the CNM program, so i just hear the discussion amongst students -- not amongst ppl who are repaying debt yet... what am i even doing?! oh right, living my dream, haha! YES! that's it!) on top of those two options, there's becoming an NHSC scholar at the start of your program -- you apply for their scholarship program, get accepted (hopefully!), they pay your tuition AND give you a stipend for living/books. then you owe them two years of your time working in an underserved area. downside is that i hear (hearsay! this is hearsay!) that a lot of the CNM NHSC jobs are doing more well-woman care, fewer deliveries, AND that there aren't a lot of 'scholar' positions even available once you finish your program -- so you might not have too much autonomy in where you end up (have to take what's available, which might not be too many positions). anyway, that's what i've heard. haven't applied for anything yet though so i haven't been talking to the actual agency -- just other students. but there is hope, if you look hard enough!!! good luck with your applications!

Their reasoning is mysterious. We'll never know why we did or did not get in -- all we can do is move forward. I can tell you this -- I got accepted at Yale and declined at SUNY-SB on the same day. I'm not going to either, as it turns out! Congrats to all of you who are going on to study at SB or elsewhere -- learn a lot, and go be great nurses!!! :dancgrp:

I actually created a FB page a few weeks ago, but I'm the only person in it, hah! I'm an ABM student (AccBacc->Nurse-Midwifery), so we found out in late Feb. But you're all more than welcome to come and join it. It's called OHSU AccBacc 2011, I think? Let's get on there and start making some plans, people. Orientation, after all, is 2 months from today. :dncgbby: (Just for the record, I generally shy away from emoticons but I saw that dancing baby and I really couldn't stop staring.)

I talked to OHSU today and was told that financial aid awards would go out 'in about a month'. Infinitely frustrating since orientation is in just over 2 months. But not much we can do about it, I guess. Sorry to not be more helpful, but that's what I know.

According to the OHSU info on the website for the ABM program: At the completion of the Bachelor of Science Nursing curriculum, the B.S. degree is awarded and graduates are eligible for professional registered nurse licensing examinations. The graduate program coursework begins in the fall term, following successful completion of the B.S. degree and nursing licensure exam (NCLEX). The School of Nursing also offers an Accelerated Bachelor’s program. I'm going to double check on this though. Getting the BSN is important to me (I'm a worst case scenario person, and I like the idea that if I had to quit or take time off after the first year, I'd be able to work somewhere, not like at Yale) if I have the option...

So did anyone send in their accept letter for a spot in ABM-CNM? Cause I did...
