  1. I agree, I ended up at OHSU after taking all of my pre-reqs at a local community college in the rural northeastern part of the country. There were no questions about quality/content. Good luck!
  2. Hey all -- Congrats on your acceptance, good luck to those who are waiting to hear... if you're looking for housing for the program, check out The OHSU Co-op | Housing for Health Science Students. Super close, super cheap, super great option for people interested in co-operative living. PM me if you have any questions!
  3. Hey all, congrats to those admitted and good luck to those still waiting! Hey, if you're looking for housing for the program, check out this website: http://www.ohsucoop.com/ Next door to the nursing school, super cheap, excellent option if you like co-operative living. PM me if you have any questions :)
  4. I'm in the school of nursing at OHSU and I have been told that at OHSU, if someone were to stay on for the DNP portion of study (currently offered, not required), the student is required to pick an area in which to focus for their additional study; examples suggested to me were ultrasound, long-term management of abnormal paps, C-section first assist, providing surgical abortion, etc. Selecting your study field would be contingent upon having a preceptor that would be willing to work with you during your DNP terms. So, to answer your question, I think you *could learn surgical abortion at that program, because CNMs can legally provide surgical abortions in OR and it could be the additional scope of practice you hoped to gain competency in during your DNP year. However, aspiration abortion is not included in the Master's level CNM program at OHSU.
  5. Hello! The time is approaching when I have to decide whether to pursue the NHSC Scholarship for my two yrs of MN/Midwifery study. I am going back and forth, partly due to the lack of available info, and I'm wondering if there are any CNM NHSC scholars out there who might be able to answer a few questions. Thanks, and thank you all for all the good midwifery work you do, love, support, etc :)
  6. I had almost all of my prereqs in process when I applied, except for A&P and Statistics, and I got in. I don't think it matters.
  7. regarding loan payment -- there are many different programs for loan repayment. one involves total forgiveness of loans if you've done 120 consecutive payments AND worked for 10 yrs (get it?) in public service of some kind. but if you check out the options on the national health service corps website (NHSC, which is affiliated with HRSA), there are jobs listed where for two years of work at an approved site, you get $60,000 of loan forgiveness (federal or private bank loans), with additional awards for sequential years. there are other options, but the NHSC one is the most commonly discussed option (i say discussed cause i'm currently racking up all of my debt at OHSU in the CNM program, so i just hear the discussion amongst students -- not amongst ppl who are repaying debt yet... what am i even doing?! oh right, living my dream, haha! YES! that's it!) on top of those two options, there's becoming an NHSC scholar at the start of your program -- you apply for their scholarship program, get accepted (hopefully!), they pay your tuition AND give you a stipend for living/books. then you owe them two years of your time working in an underserved area. downside is that i hear (hearsay! this is hearsay!) that a lot of the CNM NHSC jobs are doing more well-woman care, fewer deliveries, AND that there aren't a lot of 'scholar' positions even available once you finish your program -- so you might not have too much autonomy in where you end up (have to take what's available, which might not be too many positions). anyway, that's what i've heard. haven't applied for anything yet though so i haven't been talking to the actual agency -- just other students. but there is hope, if you look hard enough!!! good luck with your applications!
  8. just wanted to let you all know that there's a facebook group out there called 'OHSU accbacc starting 2011'. congrats to everyone who will be attending and i look forward to meeting you all!
  9. Their reasoning is mysterious. We'll never know why we did or did not get in -- all we can do is move forward. I can tell you this -- I got accepted at Yale and declined at SUNY-SB on the same day. I'm not going to either, as it turns out! Congrats to all of you who are going on to study at SB or elsewhere -- learn a lot, and go be great nurses!!! :dancgrp:
  10. I actually created a FB page a few weeks ago, but I'm the only person in it, hah! I'm an ABM student (AccBacc->Nurse-Midwifery), so we found out in late Feb. But you're all more than welcome to come and join it. It's called OHSU AccBacc 2011, I think? Let's get on there and start making some plans, people. Orientation, after all, is 2 months from today. :dncgbby: (Just for the record, I generally shy away from emoticons but I saw that dancing baby and I really couldn't stop staring.)
  11. I talked to OHSU today and was told that financial aid awards would go out 'in about a month'. Infinitely frustrating since orientation is in just over 2 months. But not much we can do about it, I guess. Sorry to not be more helpful, but that's what I know.
  12. Thanks for this info. Did she have anything else of note to report?
  13. According to the OHSU info on the website for the ABM program: At the completion of the Bachelor of Science Nursing curriculum, the B.S. degree is awarded and graduates are eligible for professional registered nurse licensing examinations. The graduate program coursework begins in the fall term, following successful completion of the B.S. degree and nursing licensure exam (NCLEX). The School of Nursing also offers an Accelerated Bachelor’s program. I'm going to double check on this though. Getting the BSN is important to me (I'm a worst case scenario person, and I like the idea that if I had to quit or take time off after the first year, I'd be able to work somewhere, not like at Yale) if I have the option...
  14. i found some info about it in this thread, which is just comparing it to another program. you're right, though - not much info out there. i'm drawn in because it's a high-ranking CNM program, and i love portland. wouldn't mind a little more info, though... i did send in a deposit and i'm planning on being there in june :) :redpinkhe https://allnurses.com/general-nursing-student/ohsu-vs-linfield-502766.html
  15. So did anyone send in their accept letter for a spot in ABM-CNM? Cause I did...
  16. what kind of YSN scholarships are people seeing, just out of curiosity (may be too personal, sorry, just forget i asked.. but i saw an interesting thread going on this last year)? i was surprised by mine, which was $8200 or something.
  17. Hah, they called me as I was on my way home from the post office. I actually apologized and said, "I'm sorry, I'm sure I'd sound a lot more excited if I hadn't opened my letter 20 minutes ago!" But still, very exciting. I'm in for midwifery, probably giving my spot to someone else out there but still very happy. Good luck to you all! On the phone they said that fin aid stuff would go out next week.
  18. Also, Cali (or anyone else) - the priority deadline for financial aid (scholarships) was March 1. If you're still thinking about attending, check out the SON finaid page and give them a ring to see if you can still apply. It's easy - FAFSA submission and an essay about how a scholarship will help you. I did the essays last weekend when I was laid up on the couch with the flu. So, don't wait until April to think about them... I'm sure sooner is better. I hope this helps!
  19. I feel the exact same way about OHSU, Calinursetobe. I want it so badly, and I know it's 'the best' according to one very prominent list. But it's so much money. One thing that I think is nice, or I'm just trying to convince myself... sometimes things come up that you don't anticipate, right? Heaven forbid you need to stop or take a break or something after the first year, or even into the specialty years -- you have that BSN to fall back on, and you can go out and work. Can't do that so easily if you're in a program that doesn't award the BSN, i.e. Yale or Vandy (or UCSF? I forget.). I worry a lot about a family somethingorother coming up (I'm a worrier), and having to take a break from school, and oddly enough I feel kind of good about the idea that I might be able to break and work if I had to after the first year (though I'd probably lose my spot in the specialty years, or have to take a full year off, whatever). Just a super fall back plan (I'm there to be a CNM, NOT stop at RN), and possibly just my mind trying to rationalize the cost. It's. Just. So. Much. But I love Portland. And if I went to Yale (waiting to hear, tomorrow I hope) I'd have to take #$@*%&$ statistics again. Seriously. That in itself is worth some additional OHSU money.
  20. Also, having never done anything like this on the old FB, I have no idea whether you can find that page or not, or request to join the group. So let me know if you can't and I'll change... something...
  21. Hey all -- I saw on a few other school's boards that people were starting up facebook groups for accepted students, as it may be an easier way to connect and ask questions and get to know a little about the rest of the cohort. I started one and if you feel like finding it, go for it. Turns out March starts tomorrow, and that means we'll be in PDX before we know it :) The address is http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_144112898984572 If that doesn't work, it's called OHSU ABM starting 2011, so you could try searching for it! All best- Paige
  22. I went to Yale undergrad and I have received like 12 emails in the last week from Yale: from the dean of Yale College about a new major, about lecture podcasts, about alumni donations... It's like someone's playing a really bad joke -- I've never gotten this many in a week before, and my heart jumps every time. I feel you!
  23. "currently reading this page: 37 (11 members, 26 guests)" too funny. we are all trying so hard to wait patiently. happy waiting, all!! :loveya:
  24. I just got a NMW letter of acceptance, and I'm excited... but I'm also pretty sure I won't be attending Vanderbilt. Wait list isn't rejection, remember that. You still have a really good chance of attending this amazing school! Anyone else with accept letters aggravated that you have to accept/decline WAY before financial aid letters are released? That is not fair!
  25. I think this is annoying. I don't care how selective you are with your class. It shouldn't take you 8 months to put it together! (Can you tell I didn't get an interview...? Hah!)
