Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

Kimmy - on average, how many hours a week do you spend studying? Are the professors nice and supportive to students? Also, how did you feel YOU did in the interview when you had it?

I really have no idea how much time I spend studying because I always take breaks. You have more time outside the classroom to study in general during the 3rd and 4th semesters (I only go to class mondays all day). I would say that school (homework, stuyding, clinicals, classes) takes up about 50 to 60% of my time in a week depending on the week.

Like any school, it depends on the professor. Sometimes they are supportive and sometimes they aren't. Most are very willing to meet with you if you have problems or questions though :)

I felt like I did well on the interview. I thought I interacted well with the interviewer, I took my time answering questions, and I had a few questions prepared to ask the interviewer. I did my best and I felt confident when I walked out.

I am not gonna let out any information that would give anyone an unfair advantage but....(Atleast i wont purposely)

I set my alarm to 5am went to sleep at 11:30pm.

Woke up at 1am.

Went back to sleep

Woke up at 4am. Cant sleep just got up and got ready.

I was tired/scared/nervous the whole time

Printed 4 resumes and left the house at 6:30 AM.

I got to MD anderson at 7am

Holy crap I was so nervous the whole time! I did the questionnaire and essay too fast. (I knew it all too easily)

I was sitting their for about 15 minutes staring out into the park. Looks very nice. The whole school from what I saw looked really nice.

Even though I did really good answers I dont have the best handwriting. and no I am not just saying that. I seen 10 year olds with better handwriting than me. After the break I was sitting there having a discussion with the guy across from me. Then they call me right away. My heart stopped... I was shaken to the core.

One of the admissions lady was escorting me to the room. She was really nice and told me not to be nervous.

Said the lady who I was talking to was really nice.

When I came into the room she got up to shake my hand. Once she did I could tell she was a really warm and nice lady. She gave off that feeling. and I calmed down alot. They asked me about my W's like everyone else said.

I have alot of W's on my record. not because my best wasnt good enough but because I chose not to focus on school(literally). but when I did change my ways I didnt have anymore W's. this was the hardest part of the questions she asked me because of my past. But she said not to worry because I made it this far and clearly I am qualified. It made me feel even happier. I got a D in micro and she said she received a D as well and she is a PHD. Which just made it even more ridiculous on how easily it made me get along with her. they just asked me about how I deal with stress and if I am ready to handle their workload. I will leave the rest of the questions out.

After I left I thanked them for having me and what she taught.

I was so nervous at first, I forgot what her name was but I remember what she taught.

I am emailing them to find out who it was cause I do want to remember her name. She was a grad teacher that taught OB/GYN undergrad sometimes

But this was a great first experience to have for application to nursing schools. This lady really changed my whole view on everything. Even if I dont get in this time I am going for another attempt because the school really is worth it.

I went from being nervous/scared for my interview to happy confident. even.. if I don't make it this time.

-side note

As I was waiting I was talking to the guy across from me. and I was thinking damn. this guy is a teacher and applying, I was hoping that half the people there would dress like crap or have some negative thing about them that would hold them back. just to give me an edge. I am not going to try to screw them over for nursing school. But I just really wanted to get in... Everyone that I talked to seem pretty well qualified but I think they want to see what type of person you are. Are you approachable? Are you a genuine person? Would people like you? Can you be a good nurse?

I feel that once we enter we are all on the same level because we are academically qualified. they want to see if you are as a person

Nice review Delgadido, my experience was very similar, I could not sleep the night before the interview and had to wake up at 5am to make it to the school a little earlier. I was also extremely nervous, my legs were shaking once I sat down in front of my interviewer, and judging by the clues you gave me, I am thinking that we have interviewed with the same person:up:. She seemed very understanding, and I did calm down once she began asking me questions, and well, I agree that this school is worth the waiting and stress, and I will be disappointed if I am not accepted, but I will apply again.

do you remember what her name was?

Unfortunately I don't, I think it started with a P... and it was a short name... maybe Pam?

If I get in I want to car pool! Anybody coming from 45 South???

where are you located along 45 south??

Bay Area and El Dorado. How about you???

i live closer to 225 i would like to carpool but it would take me too long to get over to 45 than to just hop on 225 to 610

true.. I'm most likely going to get a parking contract that way I won't have to worry about having somewhere to park!!

I think I am going to take the bus/ train. I just get on the park and ride and ride it to Congress and Main, where the train station is. That's what I did for my interview and it worked out really well. It is a longer commute, but it is so much less stressful than driving in traffic. Especially since I can spend the commute reading or studying. And there were tons of people going to school/ work in the med center that were on the train in their scrubs!

That is definitely what I plan on doing. Drive to the park and ride and relax. As someone posted earlier, the Southpoint Park and Ride takes you directly to Bates and Bertner in the Medical Center. Works out perfectly. Save money and precious study time. And by study time, I mean sleep time.
