Spring 2011 UT Health Sciences Nursing Hopefuls

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I am a UT Houston hopeful applying for the traditional and accelerated nursing program. I will complete my science prereqs (A&P 1/2) in the summer. I will finish up with Micro and Chem in the fall. I am so focused right now. Anyone else out there? :)

Congrats to everyone who has gotten an interview for UT Houston Nursing :) I'm currently a 3rd semester UT Nursing student who was admitted for spring 2010 admission... so i was in your shoes just a year ago.

If you guys have specific questions about the program or anything really, I'd be happy to answer them!

I'm not completely sure of my numbers, but for my class they admitted about 80 to 85 just to the generic program (they didn't do any interviews for the accelerated) and then we also had half-time people join my class from the previous semester and people who failed courses from fall 2009. In total we had about 120 in my class.

I have a previous degree from another university, but I purposely did not pick the accelerated program due to the intensity of the course load. You have to take 20 hrs a semester (including summer) and you only graduate 3 and 1/2 months earlier. 20 hrs of school is intense... 20 hours of nursing school is killer. Most of the people who do well in that program either have no choice or they are just able to handle the stress of nursing school + very little free time.

Just as an FYI, my class last year found out we got in through email/utlink by the first week of November, so you PROBABLY won't have to wait until the 15th. Also, many of your interviewers will be your first semester professors. They are pretty much awesome :)

Nice to see a nursing student that seems to enjoy nursing school. The two people I know who are in ADN programs are definitely not loving it. I'm not sure however, whether I should be worried that you posted this at 4:43 in the morning. Heh....

At the same time, it's saying that my post was at 12:15 pm when it's 7 in the morning...

if you had to rate the hardness of the courses from 1(extremely easy) to 10(extremely hard), what # would you give the program courses?

also, would you happen to know anyone that didnt do that well, or answered a question wrong on the interview section but still got in the program?

\

Haha... no i wrote that at around 11:30pm... I'm not sure why it showed up that late. I was definitely asleep then! I would say that my courses range fairly widely depending on the semester. For example, 3rd semester has notoriously been the semester that has the hardest courses... i entirely believe that (it's the semester you take OB/GYN and pediatrics). Overall, professional school isn't easy, including nursing...so I'd say 10 because you're not just learning and passing exams, but will eventually be responsible for a person's life.

I'm not sure what a "wrong" answer would be since it's an opinion. I'm not sure of anyone who completely bombed the interview but still got in.

Kimmy- Are we correct in thinking that the interview is a good portion of the acceptance into the program? Do you think our interviewers have a big say or impact on whether we get accepted or not?

Kimmy- What was your previous degree in?

Kimmy- how did you pay for nursing school? Did you get scholarships?

I'm actually not completely sure how much weight they put on the interview, but I went into it like it was very important. If I had to do it again, I would still treat it like it made a big impact.

Kimmy- What was your previous degree in?

I got a BS in health.

Kimmy- how did you pay for nursing school? Did you get scholarships?

I'm just getting loans since this is my 2nd undergraduate degree. I also got some scholarships too.

Kimmy - on average, how many hours a week do you spend studying? Are the professors nice and supportive to students? Also, how did you feel YOU did in the interview when you had it?

Specializes in Hematology/Oncology.

X_X got my interview in 10 hours. gonna get some sleep, gonna get up at 5 and go have breakfast. Anyone else have theirs' tomorrow?

Good luck!!!!!!!

Hey..how long was everyone at the interview? like the wait and all?

My wait was long b/c i was one of the last called i was almost there for 4 hours...however some were out very fast. there's really no way to know how long it will take just plan on staying the whole time and definitely eat before you go!!!

Good luck!!!!!!!

I will give you the same advice...Plan for your 4 hrs. They call out the names for interview completely random so you never know whos next to be called. Others will be waiting with you so the time went by pretty quick for me with all the chatting :) then when you hear your name it's like EEEeekkk!!!! LOL

When do you have your interview scheduled?
