Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am a pre-nurseing student, and my grades are not that great. ( ok, i got c's in a&p 1 and 2, plus a c in chem.) But I really don't want to change my major because thats what I want to do. I really want to be a nurse, I will be transferring to a four year in the fall, and i was wondering should I take over my A&P's or just hope and pray????

If it were me I would try and apply but also plan on taking them over again. I'm not sure how it works at your school but at the one I'm applying at they go by your GPA. I'm pretty sure the c's would not get you in. I would try and take them again. I'm thinking A and P will be the basis of what you are going to learn in Nursing and you really need to get those basics down pat. I could be wrong.:o

JMHO, but I would retake them as well. Most schools are just too competitive and really look at your core science/math classes. I know someone who has applied to the program I am in, 3 years in a row and has not been accepted each year. She has a lot of C's in her sciences.

Don't want to sound discouraging, but at least you can make a decision...

There are schools in my area that go by GPA only, and others that go by GPA combined with an interview. I have heard many people at my school say no one gets in with anything lower than a 3.4 and another girl said she knows someone that got in with a 2.6. I say apply to schools in your area and see what happens. Then if you don't have any success, check into taking these classes over. I have one friend that has all C's and she is always saying C=RN. I am too nervous about the competitiveness of the schools to get anything below a B. Speaking of which, I better go study :uhoh3:

I know of a few students that refuse to retake courses because they know of students who got into Nursing school with Cs in the past. The problem is not the past, but the present and the future. If you look at your current competition and see that they are making As and some Bs or all As, then your chances are slim no matter how many times you re-apply.

Thus, apply to Nursing schools (because it cannot hurt to try) and as you wait for your letter be enrolled in courses in which you made Cs. Good luck. :monkeydance:

I suggest you check out the schools in your area and find out about their admissions policies. Are applicants ranked based on GPA only, or is it some combination? Maybe you can find a program with a waiting list, that doesn't use GPA at all, as long as you pass. Ask the program about the lowest GPA admitted the last few semesters. It will give you a good idea of where you stand and if you need to retake your classes.

Retake but don't make anything less than A's or you can probably kiss it good-bye for sure. Good luck.

At the school I am applying to they don't look at the classes you have taken, only the GPA of your last 12 credits. So it would be possible to do average in the science courses and then boost your GPA with psychology, english, nutrition, humanities or phys ed. I am not planning to take the microbiology or anatomy until I have already applied to the nursing program. I have a 3.85 GPA right now without those two classes to possiblly bring it down and that might not even be high enough for consideration.

I would definitely retake them. These are basic courses that you will refer back to for the rest of your career. Even if you could get into a nursing school with C's in A&P, it would be in your best interest to retake them and make sure you understand the material.

You need to get through nursing school, not just get in.

Just my 2 cents! ;)

I would take them all again. It will be much easier the second time and you should be able to ace all 3 of them.

At my school (very competitive), you would never accepted with a C on any 1 of those three classes.

Good luck

I too got a C in A&P 1 and 2. Our school only requires that you get a C in your prereqs. You must keep your GPA at least a 2.5. I finishing up my 4th of 5 semesters now and have missed an A each semester by 1-2 points. My school has a waiting list too. I am at a CC doing the ADN. I say apply apply apply...see what happens. Good luck to ya!!

my school is the same way. you must have a c in prereqs and at least a 2.5 g.p.a. i made a c in anatomy and got in. i took it over anyway (final is on may 2 @ 2pm, wish me luck) when the admission advisor saw that i was retaking the course, she looked puzzled at me and ask me why, so i think that probably help me out a little bit since she saw that i was trying to improve in be above their standards. i would check with the school to see their qualifications and if you have time i would take a&p over. i would worry so much with chemistry.

by the way this leads me to a question that i have been worrying about....

if u have a c in anatomy do that means that you won't do so well in ns. i asked a friend who is currently in the same ns that i will be attending in aug. (she also made a c and was just a ditzy, lol) she said that she is doing great and as long as u study and have study groups and stay organized than everything should be fine. she also said that she knew a girl who bragged about her 4.0 g.p.a who is doing terrible in school. so i guess the true answer to this ? is that it depend on the person....i think:uhoh3:
