Does anyone know if a hospital offers you 15K for three years and you get pregnant during that period do they make you pay it back?

I mean you can work while you are pregnant right? And if they do, don't they offer you benefits with this as well?

I know every hospital is different but does anyone have any experience with this? HB

I've never heard of that. Paying it back if you get pregnant, I mean. That sounds like discrimination to me.

Many hospitals that offer enticingly large sign-on bonuses turn out to be crummy places to work.

I actually already work there as an Extern since May and it is not a crummy place to work. It was actually voted the Best Place to work in Philadelphia Magazine.and...#1 Place to Work..in the Inquirer Newspaper........HB

Three years is a long time and things change.

Voted best by who? What was the criteria used to make the claim of #1 place to work? I take ratings like these with a grain of salt. It's like taking ratings of audio equipment in Stereo Magazine as gospel. Ever notice the advertisers in the mag?

I'm not saying it is a bad place to work. All I am saying is that for me, these ratings don't hold much weight. The proof of such claims is in customer satisfaction surveys, employee satisfaction surveys, employee turnover rates, recruiting costs per employee, etc.

Usually hospitals will make you pay back a sign on bonus if you don't complete you're agreed upon commitment. Getting pregnant has nothing to do w/it. They can't penalize you for getting pregnant....only quitting and not ultimately working your contracted hours.

JimThorp,

Our Hospital's RN turnover rate is approx. 7 years. We are rated highly by our patients and surrounding communities. Our three hospitals recently went Magnet. If you are going to work somewhere you have to base your judgment somewhere. HB

If you cannot complete the contract, then you will be responsible for paying part of it back. Remember with pregnancy, you only get a certain amount of time off, the rest is taken without pay, if you want more. You contract may be able to be extended the time that you take off, but if you do not come back within a certsain timeframe, they have the right to demand the payment in x-number of days, same as what is done with any other type of contract.

What can you get in place of signing a three year contract?

Also, remember that a big chunk goes for taxes when it is in a bonus, and not added into your check, at least 25% right off of the top before you even see any of it. And that is just for federal taxes.

Agreed, but I don't hold these kind of reports as true without my own investigating as to the source of the info including the many questions I ask in a job interview. Journalists have been known to spin things on occasion.

I am skeptical of sign-on bonuses. Sometimes it could mean that that institution has a hard time holding on to and recruiting people. Not always but sometimes.
