Sigma Theta Tau International membership

Nursing Students General Students

Updated:   Published

So I just got invited and joined Sigma Theta Tau International. I don't get what the difference is for each chapters. I got invitation from Phi Pi Chapter from Chamberlain College of Nursing. I hate fraternity/sorority system so I don't really know what these chapters and stuff mean. Anyone care to explain? I was once invited to join something similar when I was taking prereqs for nursing school in community college, but I decided I didn't need that. Well, since I'm still struggling to find a job in hospital, I figured BSN and Sigma Theta Tau International might be a nice addition to my resume.

How do I put this info in my resume? Do I just state I'm a member of Sigma Theta Tau International? Or does Sigma Theta Tau International offer membership number so I need to wait to get that info before I add this to my resume? Thanks

I also was a member but did not see the benefit for the 70.00

I was nominated and asked for a subsidy which reduced my bill by about half. However, upon further thought and research I can't see what benefit other than adding it to my resume there is. If there were workshops or networking events in NYC (where Im from) then I would be more willing to join I guess. I'll add Sigma Theta Tau nominee to my resume and be just as happy.

I always thought the memberships were a joke along with NSNA. Just more meaningless fluff. As much as I wouldn't want to, being a nurse tech at hospitals landed a lot of my friends jobs not filler clubs.

I; on the other-hand, am wondering why I never received an invite. I had never gone below 3.00 cumulative GPA :-(

This stuff doesn't matter one bit on a CV or resume.

I hate to differ, but I really believe I rec'd a temp nsg sch faculty replacement position because of my membership. The Dean saw my Sigma membership on my resume, and I was asked to interview. It turned out she and ALL the other faculty members were very active in our local Sigma activities, incl officer positions.

I attended some meetings here & there; she recognized me, and I, her. I thoroughly enjoyed that position which I believed was facilitated by my membership.

It must be said here though, that Sigma was traditionally geared to academia. It is NOT a social organization like collegiate frats & sororities. It was based on my school academics and community activities.

I was proud of my membership. I wore my Sigma Theta Tau key chain-linked to my nsg school pin. Was an opp'ty to explain it to those interested.

I just listed it on my resume under 'Professional Organization Memberships'. I did belong to some other organizations that I also listed. I will admit it may be of limited value for newbie nurses. But it does reflect professional development/achievement in some circles.

Maybe not in your position, but it means something when applying  for academic jobs. Please DO NOT discourage this who are not on your career path when their career path has different recognition pathways. Did you read the journal or learn anything? You may want to consider staying in your own lane or submitting an article about your brillance

Read the journal? What are you talking about? Not sure what me submitting an article would do for you but if you need additional help with anything feel free to message me.

Regardless of my career path or not, NP jobs in generally and even RN jobs are not checking CVs for this membership.

The Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) is the second-largest nursing organization in the world with approximately 135,000 active members.

While often referred to by nurses as "Sigma Theta Tau" or even just "Sigma," the actual official name is "the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International".

The Journal of Nursing Scholarship (JNS) is the official journal of Sigma and one of the most widely read and respected healthcare journals. Published bimonthly by Wiley, JNS contains peer-reviewed, thought-provoking articles representing research by some of the world’s leading nurse researchers.

I expect you can assure me this is true by the MANY job offers you have turned down even with out an NP credential. Or does your phone not ring from recruiters like mine does? Frankly I have been in academics for 45 years and have been  instumental in evolving diploma schools into baccalaureate programs that are ranked highly and are competitive to get into. I am sure I have written more scholarly articles than you.  I don't need your help, but from your comprehension and  written response you NEED mine.

Tell me about the BSN and MSN graduates you have helped with developing their professional future? I thought not

Boy I guess I really upset nurse ratchet here.  Glad you found the bold type button. Enjoy your academics I’m sure those new grad RNs must love all the help you’ve given them.

I just want to encourage all nursing professionals to support our new nursing colleagues. They are not a threat, rather an asset to our profession. You received support from older professionals so can you attempt to support them with good recommendations for their CV or continuing education?  I guess  in nursing someone responds from the stance of  I don't know it so it is not important. That is a very discouraging answer, wouldn't you agree? (bolded for you to see)

Name calling is one of the oldest and least meaningful, effective ways to refute an argument. But it does help the name caller feel better about themselves. Please review these suggestions for improving your ability to argue in a productive way.
