Sigma Theta Tau International membership

Nursing Students General Students

Updated:   Published

So I just got invited and joined Sigma Theta Tau International. I don't get what the difference is for each chapters. I got invitation from Phi Pi Chapter from Chamberlain College of Nursing. I hate fraternity/sorority system so I don't really know what these chapters and stuff mean. Anyone care to explain? I was once invited to join something similar when I was taking prereqs for nursing school in community college, but I decided I didn't need that. Well, since I'm still struggling to find a job in hospital, I figured BSN and Sigma Theta Tau International might be a nice addition to my resume.

How do I put this info in my resume? Do I just state I'm a member of Sigma Theta Tau International? Or does Sigma Theta Tau International offer membership number so I need to wait to get that info before I add this to my resume? Thanks

Sigma Theta Tau is an honor society this is limited to the top 35% of your class.. Congratulations and you would put it with pride under honor and awards section on your resume. And yes you need to wait until you are officially a member to list it.

I am a member of my school's Phi Theta Kappa honor society. You should think about joining. Honor Society memberships look great on resumes for new grads. I don't know about that one, but my honor society also gives me access to a lot of scholarship opportunities.

I was invited to join Sigma Theta Tau in school, but I have since let my membership lapse. I don't see the benefit of paying $70 every year for it.

I did pay with credit card so they already have my money so I am officially a member right? Or do I have to wait for the induction which isn't till November? Do we get a membership card and a number?

So I guess this isn't a right thread to post this question... Seems like all topics are about 1st day of nursing school.

if you have a member number already from paying for it you can list it on your résumé.

This is general nursing student........it is that time of year where programs are starting up. I remember the excitement and apprehension all too well.....even 34 years later.

Sometimes it takes a while to get responses.....you are technically already in....you have paid however you do need to wait for induction. I would check with your chapter to be sure.

OK, thanks. I will contact my chapter to see if I can get my membership number for the purpose of listing it on my resume. Induction isn't till November for my graduating date of December for RN-BSN program. I am already looking for a job and that is why I am updating my resume.

You can always state accepted into Sigma Theta Tau induction in November.

I joined ΣΘΤ upon invitation just for another piece of resume filler but I did not renew in favor of joining ENA.

I still list ΣΘΤ on my resume, with the year of induction, under "Honors and Awards" though I'm no longer a dues-paying member.

Were I you, I'd put it there with the year of the invitation; highly unlikely that anybody will bother to check nor that they'd care even if they did (presuming that you've been invited and simply pending formal induction).

I list it under "Professional Organizations Membership". It is an honor, and online you have access to several journals, scholarships, and some networking. I live too far aw ay to attend meetings, but it isn't like a social sorority, it is a professional group. There are volunteer activities too. Almost every professor at the Univ. where I did my Masters proudly had an STT sign next to their office name plate.

I sometimes go to India, visiting an SON. One of the dorms has a large plaque honoring a Texas chapter of STT who helped fund and build it.
