showing cleavage at clinical

we just finished our psych rotation. We were asked not to wear uniforms, but instead to dress in "street clothes" with a professional appearance. More than once, 1 or 2 female students showed up to the mental hospital with cleavage showing...

what is your **professional** opinion on that?

I guess it is appropriate attire if you are looking to "hook up" with an alcoholic, HIV+, bipolar guy whose last known address was the psych ward. Hey, who am I to judge, everyone needs love!

I guess I should clarify and say this woman has only showed her butt cheeks in class, not clinical. BUT, we haven't had our first clinical, so we'll see!

I am really uncomforable with the idea they are "asking for it". Are they aware that showing cleavage is unprofessional? Do they have very large breasts were their cleavage line starts high up on their chests?

when i was in nsg school, we were specifically told not to wear anything remotely provocative on our psyche rotation.

the instructor should have sent them home.

It's totally unprofessional. Even the larger chested women in my class can cover it up by wearing a high-neck white top under their scrub top.

I swear, I don't know what it is about dressing appropriately that's so tough to understand. I was in nursing school only a dozen years ago, and I don't remember EVER seeing anyone in inappropriate clothing, not even in class where most of us wore jeans and T-shirts.

All my instructors said about dress was that we were to wear our white lab coats over "conservative clothing" whenever we went to the hospital to research patients, or attended community-based clinical sites. How hard is that?? And it doesn't even have that much to do with being young......my class had a couple of students who were only 19 years old, and I doubt it ever occurred to them to wear a low-cut top, low-rise jeans, visible thong underwear and the like when representing the school.

It seems ridiculous that nursing schools apparently have to treat 'adult' learners like junior-high-schoolers, but I think it's time to reinstate the old-fashioned dress code...........that, or have their reputations called into question as a result of students running around health care facilities looking like hookers.

I worked in a MI home and was in charge of a staff of 4 women, all old enough to be my mother. I can't count the number of times I had to tell someone, "Hey, that outfit? Don't wear it again, ok?" If it has rips, shows some assets, or I can tell what you're wearing under it, It's not appropriate for the men we work around. I was guilty a time or two of wearing something a little inappropriate, like the baggy pants with no belt!! Was quite an interesting day, that one!

However, when you're an employee, wear whatever you like let the employer deal with it. A student? You already have a strike against you, why give the clinical staff reasons to question your professionalism?

Our local community college recently implemented a policy that nursing students now have to wear scrubs to class because they were having so many show up in lingerie type tops, low rise jeans with thongs hanging out, etc.

We had a couple of young gals that wore their clinical uniforms so tight that it was uncomfortable to watch but in their defense I think a little of it has to do with what is in fashion. All the skin tight jeans and belly tops but for some reason now anything goes when "back in the day" you didn't wear tight clothes or show your stomach unless your figure was really good. But to answer the original question I think it is poor taste especially on the psych unit and would hope that the professors sent them home.

Now that's bad, and unprofessional..but check this - earlier this year some RNs I work with actually started coming to work with shirts on that expose thier abdominal area..like a cutoff shirt...um, can you say unprofessional?? Now being a guy I'm not one to complain (normally) but inappropriate is inappropriate. You wanna walk around the mall like that? Fine. But not in a place where blood, urine, and other toxic materials can come into contact with you at a moment's notice.
