Shoud I just do it??

The only thing I would ask is are you willing to accept the sacrifice that you won't be able to spend as much time with your children while you're in school. I'm not a mother, but I'm sure those who had children to raise while in nursing school can chime in on how they coped.

You're never too old. Like Ann Landers always used to ask when someone would comment that they'd be (whatever) age when they finished something, "How old will you be in four years if you _don't_ do it?" :)

Hi everyone! I'm Lucie and am new to the forums. I am presently working on my science pre-requisites in order to apply for the 2006 Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at a college nearby. I'm will 29 in November and have two beautiful kids...aged 4 yrs. and 18 months.
As far back as I can remember I've wanted so much to go into nursing. Back then you could do college for two years and become a nurse here in Canada, but now every new nurse must graduate from a 4 year degree program. So tell me straight forward...am I nuts to do this at 29 years of age...knowing that I will only start working when I am 33 or 34 years old. Am I nuts.....with having two young kids going back to school when I have been out of classes for so long??
I do have a very supportive husband who is telling me...just do it, but then I have family members who think I will exasperated in two years and wonder why I didn't take an RPN two year program or go down a different career path.
So in short...am I crazy to do this...an I too old....and is it do-able :) ?????
Come on, give me the straight forward--and I'll welcome all the tips and advice I can get.

Education at any age isn't nuts. It's the one thing you can go out and get for yourself that NO ONE can take away from you.

I don't have kids, but I'm 32 and hope to start nursing school next year. I have a BS already, so it will either be a two-year or 16 month program, but at any rate, I'll be in my mid-30s as well.

I say go for it.

You're absolutely NOT nuts. Your hubby is supportive, you've always wanted to do this and you're certainly not too old. I went back to nursing school 2 years ago at age 50 and am now a senior! The opportunity is there--you should go for it! Good luck!!! :)

You should do it. I'm 42 (with a 14 year old drama queen!!) going into my second career and I'm definitely not too old (at least I don't think so). If I'm not too old, you can't be!! GO FOR IT!:)

DO IT! I graduated in June. I turned 36 a week before graduation. I love my job and would not have changed anything. However, I did miss out a lot with my kids. My husband is very supportive and is a stay home dad so the kids did have someone available to them. It got hard for a bit because when I did start showing up at their school functions or sports games the other parents where asking who I was. Umm, her mom! Kinda sad. My kids were so proud of me at graduation, it was awesome. I am even considering going on to work on my masters-not right away. Its never too late for education.

Absolutely! I am a 33 year old sahm of a 3 year old and a 6 month old. I have a BS but still need a total of 11 classes that are recommended to me before applying. I am going to do these 1 or 2 at a time and plan on entering nursing school when my youngest starts kindergarten in thh fall of 2010! I am nuts, but have always wanted to do this. You'll be a baby compared to me. I just wish I had decided to so this the first time I went to college.

No, you are not too old!!! It is do-able, anything is do-able if you want it bad enough. I started my pre-reqs for nursing school at 27 while working full time in my other career and started nursing school at 30. I think that it will be helpful especially if you have a supportive husband that is willing to help out with dinners and picking up the kids, etc. While I do not have children yet, almost half of my classmates had children that ranged anywhere from 18 months to 22 years old! And they were able to adjust to school and parenting just fine. Quite honestly, I give anyone kudos that attended school and had kids. I don't know how I could have done it, but they did it and made do with what they had, and most of them got all A's!!! So it can be done! If it's what you really want to do with your life, you need to do it - otherwise you will always wonder 'what if'. Best of Luck!

I just turned 30 in April and have 5 children (ages 7 down to two months) and have been married 12 years. I have had a passion to be a NICU nurse FOREVER!!!! I'm volunteering in there now and am finishing up gen ed to start the nursing program in spring 2006. I say especially since you have a supportive husband DEFINITELY go for it. I've only been in two semesters, but so far managed to make 4.0 both semesters (while pregnant and homeschooling too). I say if you want it, you can and SHOULD do it. Hopefully I'll say the same thing once I start my clinicals LOL!
