Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone! I'm Lucie and am new to the forums. I am presently working on my science pre-requisites in order to apply for the 2006 Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at a college nearby. I'm will 29 in November and have two beautiful kids...aged 4 yrs. and 18 months.

As far back as I can remember I've wanted so much to go into nursing. Back then you could do college for two years and become a nurse here in Canada, but now every new nurse must graduate from a 4 year degree program. So tell me straight forward...am I nuts to do this at 29 years of age...knowing that I will only start working when I am 33 or 34 years old. Am I nuts.....with having two young kids going back to school when I have been out of classes for so long??

I do have a very supportive husband who is telling me...just do it, but then I have family members who think I will exasperated in two years and wonder why I didn't take an RPN two year program or go down a different career path.

So in short...am I crazy to do this...an I too old....and is it do-able :) ?????

Come on, give me the straight forward--and I'll welcome all the tips and advice I can get.

Thanx a bunch!

I quit my job in fastfood last week cause it paid peanuts. for me I feel like nursing is like jumping into a pool and the water is warm but I feel really scared cause I feel like i'm going to fail somewhere down the line .I want to take the quick 1 year program at a vocational school here cause it's quicker. I feel when I finish and get a job it will be worth it,cause there's such a shortage any ways it will be easy to find a job.besides that I have 3 daughters and I want a better future for them.

I am almost done with pre reqs for nursing school - wanting to get my BSN

I am 33 with a 2.5 yr old ...i actually feel like I have more time with my ds than when i was working full time ! we have a great situation with flexible work schedules so dp and I do most of the day care with 1 day a week at abuela's (grandma)

i have noticed that many people taking all the pre reqs are older so it is kinda cool ..i have made some great study buddies and i am by far not the youngest!

i don't think your kids will suffer one bit!

good luck mama

NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOO! You are definitely not too old....TOO OLD!? You'll only be 34 years old when you graduate! That's still considered young and even if it isn't by some standards, you're never too old to learn and grow. I'm 30 and I have 3 kids and if I can do it you can too. I enter this Fall and their are students at my school who are much older than I am; and if you read some of the threads on here you will see a lot of 2nd career students on here as well that are much older than you are. If you don't do it you will always have that "what if" in your head. Graduating at 34, that's what? About 30 somethin years of nursing practice (give or take depending on when you want to retire). So please...please if you have doubts don't let age be one of them!
