did any of you share your first job offer on Facebook?

Published

I'm a new grad who has just been offered an ICU position and I could not be more excited right now! I received my official offer paperwork today and I'd really like to share with my family and friends that after years of hard work, I've been offered my first nursing position in the specialty that I love.

Did any of you do this when you were offered your first position?

Nothing wrong with sharing your excitement by saying something like, "Just received an amazing job offer for my first RN job!!!" But it's a very bad idea to link a location or even mention the place or unit by name. And also a really bad idea to list your employment history. If you really feel the urge to brag, save it for LinkedIn. Hospitals have access to those Facebook links and can easily flag you for tracking. Employees can then get fired if they complain about work, even if those specific posts don't mention the worksite. Also be very cautious about friending fellow employees. It is just a bad idea to be specific. PM people if you really want to share specifics.

I would only say I finally secured a job in my dream specialty. I would NEVER say my employer's name.

When I had Facebook, I did & regret it. Now I don't have Facebook any more so it's not a problem.

I don't post anything about my employer. EVER. LOL Just for that very reason another poster mention. Employers have paid Facebook patrol. I don't even have my real name and I don't like to add co workers. Some of them can be to noisy! And you never know what they may run and tell you manager about what you post.. I think it may be safer to post you got job offer in specialty. I wouldn't post with whom yu received a offer from. But that's just me.

I did announce the first nursing job I got on Facebook. In my case, it was probably a mistake because I ended up leaving the job three months later due to unsuccessful orientation. I would think it would be okay to share that you got your first nursing job, because it IS exciting--congratulations, by the way--but like others said, maybe avoid specifics just in case something doesn't work out or you find out you don't really enjoy it.

I would seriously rethink posting where you work on Facebook or anything similar. Ive known people to get a wild hair up their a$$ and get someone fired. Spreading a rumor is never innocent nor does it have to be true. Just planting the seed in the employers mind is enough to get you fired. People tend to believe the first side of the "Story" they hear rather than a defending of said rumor. People can be nasty, dont do it

I did not share it on FB. Many of my classmates did. After being there 3+ mos I did update my linked in profile and received a few congrats after I posted the update. I am a new grad.

Facebook wasn't quite popular yet when I first started nursing, so no. And during my career I had a Facebook account for approximately one year, during which point I shared absolutely no information regarding anything work related and wouldn't even accept friend requests from coworkers. Then after seeing 4 coworkers get fired for Facebook-related incidents (some obvious direct HIPAA violations, some related to FMLA, and a few other random things) I decided I really couldn't care less about Facebook anyway and it wasn't worth the risk.

IMHO no matter how excited you are, I wouldn't post anything to Facebook. I think it sets you up to go down a path that could eventually lead to some gray areas.

Yes. It's fine. Just make sure you know your company's social media policy.

Heck yeah after all I did for this degree I posted it on Facebook twitter snapchat and took out a full page ad in the paper!!!!!

I have mixed feelings on this... I have a LinkedIn profile that lists who my employer is and I make sure to keep all of my posts professional and since LinkedIn is a professional form of social networking I think it's acceptable but you still need to be really careful. I also have a Facebook and often seen coworkers who post things that do not reflect well on our employer and I shake my head thinking that it will eventually catch up with them. I have my position and employer listed on my Facebook profile but I very rarely make any kind of post referencing work at all. I like Facebook but I think that if it isn't used carefully it can be very dangerous to your personal and professional life. I try not to post anything that I think looks unprofessional or offensive and I try not to say anything that I wouldn't say to someone face-to-face.

I did in fact share my first nursing job on FB, as did most of my nursing school classmates. In fact, many of us were hired by the same facility. It's nice to see familiar faces at work. Most of my FB friends are people I know in real life, and have watched me go through the trials of nursing school, so I had to celebrate virtually with them!
