sextuplets

Specialties NICU

So the sextuplets in AZ were born yesterday at 30 weeks gestation according to the Today Show this morning. During the show, Meredith mentioned another set of sextuplets born (I forget where) at 22 weeks. All I can say is Ugh...

I haven't seen anything more than triplets. I can't imagine being in the OR for anything more, our ORs are so small!

Wow, how sad. I don't even know what to say. I am sure that I will see more of these type of things first hand as I start my NICU career.

People are not meant to have children in litters. This is irresponsible, in more ways than one. These children are bound to have lifelong health problems.

....I agree with you and I totally blame the media for this. Look how much they sensationalize multiples. You KNOW some doctor out there is thinking, "Wow, I'll be on the national news, think of how that will affect my business!"

Granted, you cannot force anyone to have a selective reduction, but I just can't see anyone wanting to 'set themselves up' like that.

How very sad.

Infertility treatment can be a great thing for some couples but both the physician and the parents need to make prudent decisions. Even making prudent, conservative decisions you can still get unexpected results. We just sent home a set of quads. The physician only implanted two embryos. Mom ended up with two sets of identical twins. Fortunately she carried them to 32 weeks and they all had an uneventful NICU stay. Of course it will be a while before they know if there will be any developmental delays.

About the Morrison sextuplets:

According to a message board for the Fond du Lac Reporter (one of the area papers), apparently they aren't releasing any more information on the babies at the request of the family. The family received some backlash about the way they were doing things: using the media for donations, using all six embryos when they were told that they should use fewer (I do question this because I thought that she was just on fertility drugs and not IVF), going ahead with fertility treatments that were known to cause multiples when they were living in a tiny two bedroom apartment, some have questioned their maturity. When these valid questions arose, the family got offended and has since withheld information from the media.

The condition of the three remaining babies has not been reported since the news blackout.

I wonder what they would have done if all 13 of those follicles ending up taking? Would they have still declined reduction?

That said, it's sad that they have lost 3 babies, but I think it's for the best.

Omg!!!! I Am Speechless!!!!

The 13 follicles were for the Phoenix couple. All of their babies are still alive.

The Morrisons, who have lost 3 babies so far, we screened prior and found to only have 4 follicles (2 of which were poor quality).

She had two mature eggs that were ready to be released, and two immature eggs that probably weren't going to be viable. There was a 25% chance of us having twins, a 3 % chance of us having triplets and anything else was laughable...

It's sad, but they knew the risks and now they have to live with their decisions.

Personally, I can't stand drugs like Clomid or Follistim. You have NO control with them. I understand why people choose to use them, but I definitely wouldn't. I've seen to many bad cases.

Whoops, having trouble keeping them straight!

It's sad and appalling at the same time! I can't imagine the family with the 22 wkrs taking any of them home!

I know where I work they wouldn't have.... anything under 25 weeks is considered a miscarriage. I have personally seen them pack up an OR that was set up for a c-section, after they recalculated the dates and found that the woman was 24 weeks + 5 days. Sad but I guess they have to draw the line somewhere.

Ohh, I hate to hear that.

I'm so paranoid that they will refuse to believe my dates when I finally get pregnant and just go by that stupid wheel to calculate. In that case, the wheel assumes you ovulate on cycle day 14, and I ovulate on cycle day 10, which means my baby would be 4 days older than that wheel.

I'm just now seeing this on here, I'm a bit behind.

I've been following this, as the Masche sextuplets were born at Good Sam in Phx, not far from where I work/live. The high risk OB at Good Sam is well-known for keeping multiples in the oven as long as possible .... I think 30 weeks for 6 babies is amazing. They were trying to get the Morrison mom to come to Good Sam to be under Dr. Elliott's care, but they decided not to at the last minute.
