sextuplets

So the sextuplets in AZ were born yesterday at 30 weeks gestation according to the Today Show this morning. During the show, Meredith mentioned another set of sextuplets born (I forget where) at 22 weeks. All I can say is Ugh...

I haven't seen anything more than triplets. I can't imagine being in the OR for anything more, our ORs are so small!

Thanks for the detail; no I finally get it!

The latest article I read about the Morrison sextuplets said that the hospital won't be releasing anymore information about them. I wonder if this was at the parents request. The parents actually have a website (you can use google to look for it). I wonder if they will stop updating it, even if they are able to take one or two of the babies home eventually. I'm sure they are too heartbroken currently to update it.

As of the last article, 3 of the 4 boys have passed away, so they have one son and 2 daughters still alive.

It must be so hard to be 'on stage' like that. After making the website, and doing interviews and all, then to have such a bad outcome, like that. It must make it even more horrible. They had said they were optimistic, even with the premature birth. I don't know how I would feel anything but devastation, but maybe they feel they owe it to their children to try to save them through positive thinking?

That doctor should lose his license. :nono:

(IUI= follicle stimulation meds + intrauterine insemination. IVF=follicle stimulation meds and the follicles are removed, fertilized, perhaps frozen, and replaced at a later date.)

Usually, when there are too many follicles for IUI, the cycle is cancelled.

Typically, in the case of these higher order multiples, the couple then proceeds with unprotected intercouse against medical advice.

I'm not condoning this practice, but I can see why it happens- the couple is very invested in getting pregnant, has a hx of fertility problems, has spent ALOT of time and money to reach the point of IUI, is seriously disappointed to have the cycle canceled, and is disinclined to let a rare fertile cycle pass with a chance of pregnancy at least unattempted. They think that since the likelihood of getting pregnant is small, they are safe-ish. It really does not occur to them that they could conceive 4-6-8 since they are infertile.

It would have been safer to proceed to an IVF instead of an IUI, but that costs many thousands of dollars more.

I agree, IVF would have been a better option, but like you said, much more expensive. $25000 for an IVF cycle vs. $400 for an IUI cycle. BTW, not all IUI's are medicated. Mine have all been unmedicated, with no stim meds.

Even with cancelling the IUI cycle, and just having uprotected sex, they would have had less babies. I highly doubt that 13 sperms would have made it to the 13 eggs.

Yes, because she could get pregnant.I'm going to take a stab at it and guess she had problems staying pregnant. And that's another story.

Good. It's just a death watch. :o

Yep, sad to say. The website hadn't been updated since the birth, but the other day I went to check it out and the website's been disbanded, or at least put out of public view.

If these parents had been getting ready to have Quads, I could understand them wanting to try, but 6? That is playing the lottery and one only has to turn on the news to know that these stories do not have happy endings 98% of the time.

I have twins, and I would have elected to risk losing the pregnancy entirely and trying again, than to give birth to a high number of multiple children that I was going to have to sit back and watch them lose their battle with life, one by one.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Morrison family. Losing three children in one week is heartbreaking.

I'm so concerned about the ones that may survive. If you've seen the movie "Little Man" about the 23weeker who survived with multiple handicaps, you know what I mean. It's so very sad. Think about the boy in the movie, Nicolas, and multiply that by 3. So very, very sad.

People are not meant to have children in litters. This is irresponsible, in more ways than one. These children are bound to have lifelong health problems.

Someone in an earlier post mentioned the family's no longer allowing the hospital to give out info on the remaining babies. Makes me wonder if another one (or two) has died and the family has reached their limit of public grieving.

The Morrison's (the MN couple) gave a local TV News station exclusive coverage. On wcco.com I can't tell if they will release new information. the last line of the story about the 3rd baby dying said, "Hospital officials say no further information would be released." I took that to mean no more information related to that baby, but not sure if it means related to the other babies??

Also, in the same article, the parents say: "We continue to trust in the Lord and are hopeful for a good outcome for Cadence, Lucia and Sylas," Which leads me to believe that those three were still alive when the hospital said no more info...

I just pray that the parents are doing ok. I can't imagine the post-partum depression combined with the emotions that you would experience with 6 very critical babies and then watching them die one by one. :o
