I had mailed asthma care plan to this particular parent who's daughter has asthma.

This is the care plan that the physician is to fill out and return to the clinic. Parents are supposed to bring an inhaler in so that we have it while kid is in school.

This care plan came in about a month ago, but no inhaler.

I just got off of the phone with the Mother. I told her that the order is here, and we are just awaiting the inhaler.

Mother states: Oh.... I thought the doctor would send you the inhaler too. What ???

Uhhh.....NO !! That's your job !

That doesn't matter, if we feel uncomfortable, that means we get special treatment. (I just wanted a reason to use mr. sarcastic)

Ok. I am feeling dumb. What is DASA?? I googled it and got a wide array of possibilities. Sorry, sometimes I am a little slow.

Hey now.

These last 3 pages are awesome and just the pick-me-up I needed. I swear if I have to talk about head lice or deal with one more "My teacher said I'm coughing too much" visit, I'm going to lose it! I love "working" with other nurse, even if it's on-line. You've restored my sanity and I thank you!

OK, I'm back. I am not a school nurse. I have more confidence in kids than you do. Inflammatory, not really, just a different perspective. I will just leave at that.

Far & Old Dude and the rest of you wonderful school nurses, gonna get you guys back on track..........

As a Family NP: The local public school systems ( about 5-6, covering 5 counties) do not allow elementary (K-5) kids to self carry albuterol inhalers or any other meds. These are different school systems with policies decided by different school boards. Middle school & High school can self admin albuterol with an asthma action plan which is kept by the school nurse. I work with an asthma/allergy/immunology doc & I would have to disagree that elementary school age kids (5-11) do not require supervision with inhalers. Yeah every now & then you run into one who is the exception and can actually use albuterol inhaler with spacer correctly & when actually needs it. Kids in this age group do not have the intellectual capacity to make that decision. Parents still must supervise home meds such a controller inhalers.

I've been on AN for a while now, and post infrequently, but I do enjoy reading in many different forums. NEVER have I seen such entertaining back and forth, as well as good humor and (dare I say) good 'ol fun, as in the school nurse forum. I'm not a SN, but I do work with them... Wish I worked with you guys! Keep it up!
