Just a quick vent thread about something that makes me want to scream - teachers sending kids to me in the last few minutes of the day for nonsense reasons. I had a little more tolerance when i worked in a bussed district, but now most of these kids are leaving right to the care of their own parents. The need for lip balm and lotion and bandaids for invisible cuts can certainly wait. Kids don't need to ice the bump they got three days ago or be seen for the headache that started in period 2 or lie down for the stomach ache that began after lunch. GRRRRR.....
that it all...

My kids are ages 13 and up and I have actually said to them, whilst staring pointedly at the clock, "You're kidding me, right?"

If they can walk into my clinic and actual talk and tell me what the problem is then it's not an emergency and I don't even give them my time. My teachers know better and if they don't they will real quick. I know my students pretty good so it doesn't take me but about 30 seconds or less to know if they should really be standing there in my clinic 15 min prior to dismissal. Drives me crazy also.

This drives me bananas! More often than not, this is a child who just dreads the bus ride home. "Ride is too long and I have a headache" etc. Or a sore throat 5 minutes before the bell. (This one is the teachers fault. What are they thinking?)
I sympathize.

Makes me crazy too! If they have a bloody nose that won't stop-fine but if it's because they have a sore throat I am not going to be pleasant!

I had a teacher send a kid who wasn't sick, the kid never even said he was sick, nothing. She said your eyes look sick, go see the nurse. He said, but Im fine, she wouldn't stop hounding him. he had a great nights sleep, ate bkfst, no congestion, etc ...NOTHING. but she demanded him to come see me and needed a note stating what I did, but we all know..I never sent back a note.. umph

This drives me nuts too, especially during Friday special that ends right before the bus. Gotta love an injury on a Friday afternoon when most parents commute an hour or more. Sigh. With that said, perhaps something is going on during the bus ride? My daughter is 7th grade and hates the bus because of bullying, really foul language and yes, kids doing drugs and I've even heard oral sex. Just a thought for those who frequent the HO right before going on the bus.
Oooof. I just got a little sick.
Often when there is a FF right before the final bell, I do think "what are they avoiding?"
Oral sex. One of my friends was saying that she was sexually abused by an older kid on her bus when she was in 4th grade, but that was back in the 80s- isn't the bus equipped with a camera nowadays?

This happens to me all the time (usually from the same 1 or 2 teachers). Usually it is end of the day headaches. I explain to the student (elementary) & teacher that I will not give them medication right before getting on the bus as I will not be able to assess how they react to it. Also, a lot of parents don't answer their phones & have no voicemail, so how will I be sure they don't get another dose of Tylenol right when they get home. Explaining this helps somewhat, but it still happens. Very annoying.

Sing it!!!!!!!!!!!
My school dismisses to parents. Last year I had a kid show up with a note about his back hurting at 2:40. We dismiss at 2:45. Steady gait, calm demeanor, no apparent distress. I walked him right back to the classroom. The sub looked at me like I had 10 heads and said, " he asked to go to the nurse, right?" I told her that he can tell his mother about his pains (I tried to be professional about it).

Yesterday 4 in the last twenty minutes of the day, all for things that happened after school the day before. You made it to the end of the day...you can make it another 20-30 minutes.

Oh my gosh yes! I have a PreK teacher who loves to send little ones who "look sick" in the last half hour of the day - and they're so little, they come with the teacher's aide - who agrees with me that if they made it that far with a tummy ache they can make it a little longer! So now that's our venting time to each other while the little one "rests" or uses the bathroom.
