School Nursing...the best of jobs and the worst, all at the same time !

I realize it's the end of the year and everyone here has frayed nerves......but after many years as a SN, I realize that it get's harder to enjoy this job. I do love the kids and their many needs, and I love being able to help kids out when they are feeling poorly.

But.....I am so dang burned out on overbearing teachers who want to control every aspect of the clinic. I used to be respected for my profession and my hard earned license, but this has gone by the wayside. No respect. Unless you are in Education, you are nothing.

I feel disrespected and second guessed over and over most days.

I try to support our educators, but respect is earned, and it works both ways.

Students: They are more demanding than ever before. No manners and no respect.

Parents: No respect. Demanding. Coddling kids who are NOT SICK. Parents whowon't give us current emergency phone numbers, so we can call them if their child is sick, injured.

The one constant here is: NO RESPECT !!

I'm trying here, but it's hard. Please tell me if I am the only one who feels this frustration ?

I always say I appreciate my job the most when I'm sitting in a chair down at the beach day after day each summer! That extended time off gives me time to recharge and prepare for the next school year.

Specializes in Med-surg, school nursing..

Just had a kiddo come up and tell me he hopes my foot gets better. Then he said "Whoa, that's swollen!"

I told him it was a cast (I have a sock over it as I don't want to world seeing my -well pedicured- toes while at work) and he said, "My dad has really big feet, I could bring you one of his shoes, I think it would fit."

Things like that make it even more worth it. My good days well outweigh the bad, and the bad days here, were considered great days at the hospital. No where near the stress.

Specializes in med-surg, IMC, school nursing, NICU.

I had a parent condescend and berate me for 10 minutes over the phone on Monday because her sweet pea got lice over the weekend and I didn't catch it the last time she was in my office (the third week of April)

This mom just didn't UNDERSTAND why I haven't sent a letter regarding the OVERWHELMING number of lice cases in the district. These parents are simply EXHAUSTED from cleaning the houses and paying LOTS of money for visits to a professional lice clinic. WHEN am I planning on doing a classroom check?!?!

I just sat there and let her talk, then dropped some serious pediculosis knowledge on her. What else could I do? She thinks I am a lazy, 20-something year old idiot who has no idea what she is doing. She thinks my job is useless? Join the club. Everyone else seems to feel the same way.

I'm ready for summer.

Did you explain to her that she is actually the one who is responsible for her child, up to and including the icky parts of parenting?

Seriously! Someone had mentioned parents who wash their hands of their kids for the 8 hours that they are at school. It's insane. I'm sorry your child's lice has inconvenienced you but guess what? That's the dice you roll when you have a kid!

I'm with ya...it'll suck the life out of ya. But I feel better when I think about going back to working year round, nights, every other weekend and holidays.

There, don't you feel a little better?

Yes! On the bad days, I remind myself that when the school bell rings and the kids leave the building, I get to leave, too! There is no mandatory overtime, working in the middle of the night, and I can actually make plans on the weekend! My oldest daughter is in middle school now, and I feel like I missed so much precious time while she was younger because I was working odd hours, holidays, and every other weekend. I will gladly put up with the annoyances of haughty teachers and exasperated parents because the perks can't be beat!

Specializes in family practice and school nursing.

The schedule, the retirement system, and my love for the kids are the reasons I stay. The administration, some parents ,and some of the teachers are the reasons I wish I could go

It is my honest opinion that the 1st six weeks & the last 6 weeks are the most challenging!!

1st six weeks trying to establish a routine & get things done. :wacky:

Last 6 weeks everybody is wheels off & there is no stopping the crazy train.

I could not have said it better myself. I showed one principal my office visit numbers this week (50-60 visits per day, up from 30-45) and principal was like "wow! what is going on."

Me: Allergies (thanks New England!) and senioritis that has expanded beyond the seniors to the entire school.

Principal: That sounds about right.

Wow. All of this is so true! I love being a school nurse. I love having the time off that I get. It's a very flexible job. However, there are frustrations. Sometimes it's just good to vent. Then you realize how good this job is! Of course, there are some really tough schools out there. For the most part, I'm pretty happy.
