Teacher appreciation week...

I love teachers. Many of my friends are teachers.

I'm sick of hearing about all of the wonderful activities that we will do for Teacher Appreciation week. Someone even made a joke at the last staff meeting about "having to share the treats with the social workers, office staff and nurse." Um, it's my week, too. Ugh. Sorry, just had to vent.

Because it IS our reality.

Exactly! I get that a lot. "Why dont you go somewhere private?" I have tried. I tried the teachers lounge. Then everyone bothered me with personal medical questions. I tried a sign on my door and eating with the light off in my room. They will burst right on in with vomit, blood, snot, whatever. I have hid in another room and they will either track me down and find me or call my cell phone. "Well dont answer it!" is what I get then. And my response is "The one time I dont answer will be the one time a student is dying!" Its is a reality for us. I dont understand why everyone else in the building can get 30 min uninterrupted but even at my other school it was exactly the same.

Right? What is up with this? Like people think that medical subjects are the only ones that we can relate to? Sit down to lunch so a teacher's aide I met once can tell me about his father's cancer treatment?

... I'm actually a pretty nuanced human who cares about more than just medical things and bodily fluids...

THIS. I sit around patiently waiting for someone to stop updating me on their latest doctor experiences or rashes so I can tell everyone about a date I went on that I'm excited about or a date I went on that was hilariously awful. I have lots of stories to share if someone shushes long enough!

It is unfortunate that it has to be this way. I eat in my car, just to have 30 minutes of peace. Of course, if they need me they just call me because I'm on campus but still those 30 mins are sometimes really needed.

Yup, and the response I get is this...

"I cannot triage"...oye

Mother of 2 grandmother of 7 and she cannot tell if a person is dead alive or needs help???? Her particular parenting style is to immeadiatly tend to their needs. She does everything for her adult professional children, including paying for vacation. Blah!!

I will say I am very bitter over it for some reason this year. Ive never cared before that the teachers got recognized and I, the nurse, did not but I guess knowing how much I run my legs off and do around here. Knowing I am the only one who never gets a 15min break or an uninterrupted lunch just bothers me. It would be nice to feel appreciated but sadly most days I do not. Just a thank you would be nice. Oh well. Just moody I guess. I'll get over it.

I feel you. I'm lucky to have a staff member that I was allowed to train before the school year started. She still calls me but the interruptions are less than 5 minutes and she handles everything else really well. But when she isn't hear, I don't get a break. I've talked to my AP who tells me to close the door, but whenever I do I feel like either the little ones just sit and bang on it, the walkie pages me 1000 times OR my front desk secretary unlocks it and lets whoever in.

We are having staff appreciation week - so there are goodies this week, and i'm included on that so that's pretty cool. One of the secretaries was really sweet and brought me a piece of cake from the supermarket specifically for nurse's day :) I honestly don't expect anything else.

A wise old coot on here once said not to have any expectations of anyone and you won't be disappointed.

I think she needs a third child, my wife and I are orphans, can she adopt us?

I received my annual dozen of Cinnabon sized homemade cinnamon roll from one family, this is more than my SNF is doing. The kicker? HR wants to talk to me about retention ideas at the SNF. Can't wait till after June 9th when I can sit down and talk to them. Now, let's see what the new PTO pres does, the last was a nurse and we were always remembered.

I really don't mind not getting recognition for Nurses week but I am starting to really resent not getting a lunch break. Not only do I not get a break but lunch is free and considered one of our benefits. I just started adding up how much it costs me to provide my own lunch everyday and it is not an insignificant amount of money.

I hear ya. I have the same non-sense frequent visitors who want to just "rest" at 12 every day. Even if I kick them out after 2 minutes, they stream in, and before I know it, the cafeteria is closed. :( Nobody really understands, since the rest of the staff gets a break.
