On a Roll !!!!

This week has been NUTS! I actually connected with 4 different MDs to give the school side of the story (with signed releases). Amazing how it differs from what the parent and kid say...

AND I had a kid an emergent, undiagnosed anaphylactic reaction with Epi and 911.

Good times!

High five!!! Way to go!!!

Bam!!! Another kid snatched from the jaws of death!! School nurses...that's what we do!. Praise be to God you were there! Excellent assessment and save!

What were the student's symptoms when you gave the epi?

The only time I've given it the girl had low sats and was wheezing (she came in straight from the bus, known allergy). Ambulance was called while I was giving it and she was in my office probably a total of 6 minutes. Another SN friend was walking a kid out to the parent who came to pick up (student was getting hives) and he said "my lips feel funny" and she turned him right around and told him they couldn't waste a second and stuck him.

THIS is why I think we should have stock Epi. But we don't.

The seven minutes (or whatever) of waiting for EMS is no fun...

i'm having a sale on allergic reactions not quite severe enough for epi, but needing and improving nicely with benadryl. Let's just hope it's not all leading up to something bigger.

Your friend's situation started out similar to how my last undiagnosed allergy that needed epi started. Kid had hives and no other symptoms, was stable, no known allergies. Had benadyl on board, parent arrived for pick-up to take straight to doctor. Hives were spreading to full body. Then suddenly itchy throat straight into stridor. Had my standing epi on hand just in case, in it went, ambulance called and off to ER student went. It took a while for the adrenaline to settle after that one.

Beet red skin, "hot potato" voice and HUGE and I mean YUGE tonsils and uvula!! The pistachio nut appears to be the culprit. Allergy testing happening ASAP and self carrying an epipen.

THIS is why I think we should have stock Epi. But we don't.

The State of Maryland has made epi pens exempt of prescription to facilitate stock epi in every school. No need for a physician's prescription makes epipens for schools accessible to all schools. Wish every state had such forethought.
