Another Tragedy

I'm not posting this to ignite a gun debate but to call on you, since we are all related by way of our many and varied relationships with students, to offer prayers and positive thoughts for Santa Fe High School parents and students...another shooting; 8 have been confirmed dead so far. Dear God!!

Frankly my wife and I are done and fed up. We have a 6 year old daughter. As soon as I finish my schooling we are going to look at my applying for positions overseas. Most likely New Zealand, Ireland or of similar locations.

As of today we have now lost more children to school shootings in American than we have members of the military, despite the fact that we are fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa.

Thats right as of right now its more dangerous to go to SCHOOL than be in the military. That is utterly sad and disgusting.

22 this year, I think. 22.

Wow, that is sick! That's a big number. I wonder how many deaths this year so far? Oh I see from the graph on the link above, just above 30 deaths so far! Dear Lord. Help these and all us people. Stop the insanity.

...

I agree with OD the word 'bullied' is now so watered down it doesn't mean anything.

Maybe the words 'socially traumatized' and/or 'socially terrorized' would get more attention.

It's very tragic that we've had another school shooting. The shooter was confronted relatively quickly, one of the officers that responded was also wounded. Given what has been discovered about the shooter, it could have been a lot worse. Explosive devices were located around the campus.

What should be really chilling is more people have been lost in Chicago since 2018 than have been killed in all military incidents and school shootings combined, and that's not by a small margin... and that's not getting much press attention at all.

Oh, and by my count, we've lost around 28 service members in fatal incidents, while deployed, asset movement (C130 to the boneyard) and in training since the beginning of 2018.

Chicago's mostly gang related violence gets plenty of press. Especially since someone seems to bring it up every single time there was is an officer involved or school shooting, in order to attempt to shut down the debate about gun control,

But as sad as it is gang on gang violence is sort of the accepted norm. Whereas our children being murdered in school, which is supposed to be one of the safest places in our country, is not as accepted. And I hope it never is as accepted. Because if it becomes that way then we have failed as a country.

I don't have the time or energy to research the stats. I'm just heartsick over it and I wanted to channel prayers and love via this post in support, in any form, to yet another, set of parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and even enemies of those who lost loved ones today; their lives will never, be the same, forever. Dear God!

I'm going to post a "suggestions" piece in general...who knows, maybe a nurse will be the one who comes up with a new and yet, never thought of, intervention.

I value your perspective, Old Dude. God Bless!!!

I am heart broken by this incident. There were a lot of early signs. We need more training on situational awareness and identifying early signs collectively. Not only for school staff but also parents and close relatives to recognize early signs.

Yes to this^^^^^

Kids don't know the difference anymore of someone actually being a bully or just being plain rude/mean. When kids tattle on others I hear stuff like "johnny cut in line in the cafe, he is being a bully" I just want to say "No, Johnny is just rude and has no manners".

Maybe Johnny's both. You think bullies are nice people with manners? The definition? Is the kid supposed to stop and analyze the situation before they dare speak up? Kids are speaking up all over and not being heard. They're afraid to go to school because of guns getting in to the hands of mentally ill people, bullies, terrorists, whatever you call them.

Also , maybe in the above example the kid was telling you just part of the story. Maybe Johnny also shoved them and threatened them but they were too embarrassed to tell more in fear of being called a whimp or a whiney baby or unable to defend themselves. Who knows the whole story but they can sense if they are being heard or not, or being downplayed.

I found out yesterday a friend of a friend of friend's daughter was one of the 10. Yes, that feels removed and yet not removed at all. It actually made it feel even more real for me.

I'm still not sure what the answer is as whole. But ::hugs:: to that school community and those parents and families.

Yes, gun control works in Chicago. Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws, but obviously the gang members choose not to obey them. So, let's take the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens so the criminals are the only ones with guns.

Schools are "gun free" zones. I don't understand why these students are bringing guns into schools. Don't they understand there are gun control laws for schools?

Either this thread or the original School Shootings thread is on Facebook. Heads' up.
