Another Tragedy

Published

I'm not posting this to ignite a gun debate but to call on you, since we are all related by way of our many and varied relationships with students, to offer prayers and positive thoughts for Santa Fe High School parents and students...another shooting; 8 have been confirmed dead so far. Dear God!!

The kid asked a girl out and she said No.

So he shot them all.

Yes, gun control works in Chicago. Chicago has some of the strictest gun control laws, but obviously the gang members choose not to obey them. So, let's take the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens so the criminals are the only ones with guns.

Schools are "gun free" zones. I don't understand why these students are bringing guns into schools. Don't they understand there are gun control laws for schools?

I have to say, I am so over the sarcasm...EVERY FLIPPING TIME people voice a concern about DEAD CHILDREN, out come the " Ban cars, Ban knives, Gun free Zones" etc

I would guess that a majority of people who say that want gun control, really want:

1. No more kids (or anyone else) to die, crazy thought, isn't that?

2. Reduced access to prevent those who should not (hx of DV, previous gun events etc)

3. Liability to those who do not secure their guns (parents whose kids take guns from a home)

I don't know how to get there, but I sure think that those who refuse to at least consider the rights of someone else to live really have no interest in any of the above.

I also don't understand why the NRA is so financially invested in Congress? What is the point of a donation if not to sway their views?

I don't want the gun of a person who is trained. licensed background checked...you are not usually the problem. But I do want there to be a conversation that doesn't begin with

This is My 2A right and eff you for even thinking about taking it away

My suggestion is for everyone at school to be transparent, meaning when I am worried about a student I want to know that the parents have been notified and the student is getting help. And continues to get help and to be monitored.

Currently; maybe in my school only, if I am concerned I report to the counselor. From there I here nothing, nada, zip.

I do not trust my counselor to follow through (sad). The counselor is the main reason I am looking for a new position. If I can't trust the one person that should be monitoring the school's atmosphere then I have to go. Yes, I have complained yet I see no change.

Another thing overlooked is that the bully is fluid. The person in one situation is the bully and the next is the one that bullies.

i'll be honest, i haven't delved into this one much. We've had our own regional tragedy here where a school bus was hit on the highway going to a field trip and a child and teacher were killed and dozens were injurred. I just didn't much feel like watching the news after the details unfolded.

I do agree with the notion that the term bullying has been watered down. Schools are too afraid of getting sued and well-intentioned HIB laws have turned what would have been considered childhood spats and lessons in conflict resolution into much grander issues. The outcome? Children not learning simple conflict resolution techniques or problem solving skills.

That accident was horrible. My deepest condolences to all involved

That first statement staggers me...I'm so sorry for you. You know that's not how it "should" be - hence, the job search. Good luck.

And yes to that second statement. Parents (especially this year) seem to be jumping in where they should perhaps be assessing and asking "so....what happened right before Charlie hit you?"

Oh, you had your hand in front of his face, saying "I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you?" Got it. Not bullying. We've had dozens of episodes like that where it's turned out to be "mutual combat."

The morning of this awful tragedy, I was outside as buses were pulling away with our 1st graders for a field trip. The "thought" of a crash with those kids on board flashed in my mind and I shuddered...then that happened - Lord, please comfort those poor families.

I was thinking this may be you, but i was afraid to ask. I'm so sorry.

This. When The Kid was 5, another kid, friend, neighbor, bit him on the bus. Of course I was upset, but before calling the mom, I asked my kid how it happened.

The Kid was sitting in front of The Biter.

Well...if you sit in front of him, how did your hands get in his face???

Answer: He was turned around with his hands in The Biter's face.

That led to a discussion on that, and my phone call to the mom was much more that of an ally in this "let us teach both our kids to keep their hands and mouths to themselves..." instead of YOUR BULLY KID BIT MY ANGEL!!!

Also, I'm extremely disheartened to hear that this shooter thought it was his right to murder a young lady who rebuffed him, and also really disgusted that his dad didn't secure his guns.

Our flag is at half mast. Again. After The Pledge we had a moment of silence. Again.

The solution is difficult. It is obvious that kids/ adults that shoot up a school/ university/ night club have mental issues. The key is to keep the guns away from people with mental illness that are a threat to society without banning guns from everybody that is on an anti-depressant.

See??? That is a much more palatable statement (IMHO) in my book, than the sarcasm I pointed to earlier. THAT should that be part of the conversation EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Typically, it is not what hear from those who fear we want to grab all the guns...We (at least myself and many I know) don't. Thank you.
