Another Tragedy

I'm not posting this to ignite a gun debate but to call on you, since we are all related by way of our many and varied relationships with students, to offer prayers and positive thoughts for Santa Fe High School parents and students...another shooting; 8 have been confirmed dead so far. Dear God!!

Simply from my myopic point of view about the bullying initiatives...it seems there is a lot of time and energy spent on relatively minor incidences of simple meanness when, in many cases, serious bullying goes unreported or unnoticed. I think the subject goes way deeper, emotionally, than everyone realizes.

I think some kid looking at another crosseyed is considered bullying by some parents. And that where some of the disconnect comes. The term "bullying" has lost its shock value and has become a part of our everyday language. And it is no big deal anymore and we cannot see the woods for the trees, and then out of the trees comes a kid with a gun after he pulls the fire alarm.

Then we are left wringing our hands hands wondering how this could possibly have of happened?

We have a student that is a concern too but I'm not sure how this is being cared for, except documentation it seems.

We probably have all seen those kids and thought - HMMM. I don't know if the info is passed or alerted with moving to a new campus.

Our kid was told to go to what I call lock down school, but parents have chosen to home school. I do know if they do decide to return to public school he will still have to go to a lock down campus. BTW, this decision took 2 years - and many outbursts.

I agree with OD the word 'bullied' is now so watered down it doesn't mean anything.

Bulling is hard to combat, but I truly believe the burden falls back on the parents of both involved.

Most of my students I am concerned about have trauma in their lives coming from the home, and no matter how much we do to support them here, if they aren't getting what they need at home, no long term changes happen.

Yes to this^^^^^

Kids don't know the difference anymore of someone actually being a bully or just being plain rude/mean. When kids tattle on others I hear stuff like "johnny cut in line in the cafe, he is being a bully" I just want to say "No, Johnny is just rude and has no manners".

I found a story about tragedy avoided on Wednesday!

This Illinois officer stopped a school shooter before anyone got hurt | FOX2now.com

Side note: my local news didn't start covering the shooting in texas until about lunch time and this story was posted immediately after the story about the shooting.

I'm thankful for everyone in this forum who does share the good and bad school related stories they find.

Absolutely! Those poor parents!

I am in IL and saw this story a few days ago. This is the first time I've seen what kind of weapon the shooter had. A 9mm handgun. I wonder if anyone would have rushed him if he'd had a more powerful weapon?

The article referenced a 9mm semiautomatic rifle.
