Man, I'm totally being ripped off!! I mean I knew it, but to see other school nurses' salaries compared to mine is scary. I'm embarrassed to admit how much I make, but here goes. It's around 27K a year, total.I get paid $20/hr, but the catch is I get paid unemployment in the summers, Christmas break, snow days if out a week. If I run out of vacation hours, which happens really quickly, and we miss a day for teachers in service or something, then that's a day where I don't work and don't get paid. My school has almost 700 students, one of the other girls has 1000 students at her school. Basically, I work there to get a lot of days off with my child and to be near her school. I wish they would make us close to teacher pay because long breaks are a real financial struggle. We're constantly told how much we are needed, but if that's the case, why aren't we appropriately compensated?!
Sorry. I didn't know a rant was coming on until I started typing.
I am in the same boat as you but do not get paid unemployment during the summer. I work occasionally on the weekends to make up the lack of salary. I have been trying for over a year to get compensated for the work I do and am getting no where.
Thank you to the nurse who started this thread! I have been wondering about this since I crossed over into school nursing. I am a nurse with 10 yrs experience in Pediatrics and Med-Surg. Also did a bit of case management and UR. When I made the decision to become a school nurse I was making a little over $37/hr; $71K/yr. Yes the money was great but the commute, stress and extra hours made family life not so great. Now, as a school nurse I make $30/hr; about $51k/10months.
I was wondering if I had undersold myself with the schools but after looking at this thread I am so relieved! Money truly isn't everything. For myself, being home to make dinner for my family every night is priceless.
I am the district health coordinator and the school nurse for the middle and high school which has 950 kids total. I make 26,856 a year. The other two nurses are nurses for one school which are the elementary schools. They make 16,100 a year! I have no health assistant or secretaries and neither do they. I have been fighting for them to get an increase and they keep saying there is no money for it. We don't even have a budget to draw from. I am trying to change that, but it seems like I am fighting a losing battle. I have to bring work home with me all of the time.
State: TNSalary: Mon - Friday, no weekends, all holidays off, no summers, working with beautiful kids = PRICELESS.
Hi Wave Watcher! I know this is a 2012 post, but hopefully you are still around and active on here!
My family is moving to the eastern TN area & I was wondering what the salary is like? We are looking at Unicoi county, but of course I would be willing to drive a bit for the RIGHT JOB :)
I sent you a PM. I just arrived in Oki and would love to meet other nurses :)
I am fortunate to have my SN position. I work for DODEA (Dept of Defense Dependent Schools) in Okinawa Japan. We are a US military base school system that supports the children of US service members world-wide. We begin the last week of August and end mid-June. My work day is 0700-2:20. Nurses are considered teachers on the pay scale. I am part of the teacher's union. I receive great health benefits and have a matched thrift savings plan. An added bonus is a very generous housing allowance for those of us who do not live in on-base housing. I start my 9th year in August and will hit the $50k/year mark then.
Hours 7:30 to 3:00, work at a very small high school/jr high. I work for a large children's hospital that contracts out for school health. I make $24 an hour, not averaged over holidays or summer. I took a 25% pay cut from another life as a nurse. One year Med/Surg and 5 years dialysis experience. The pay stinks but the hours are better for grandmothering.
