Hey, how do you make 100k out of 26-29 dollars an hr from Fri-Sun....Just curious cause I live in the south.
This thread is depressing. RNs in the Southeast earn the lowest salaries out of the entire country and my husband has no desire to move. As a new nurse the salaries start around $20 plus (if you choose) shift diffs anywhere from $4-5 and weekend option between $6-9. Even though we're paid less, you can work Fri-Sun nights and earn $100K. Not a bad deal.

Does anyone know the starting salary for a new grad in South Carolina: Charleston or Columbia or Alabama: Huntsville?

I just got offered (here in central ohio) $19.60 base pay with $3.25 shift dif starting at 5pm and $2.50 for weekends! So weekdays I make $22.75/hr and weekends I make $25.35/hr, I didnt' think that was too bad for a new nurse who graduated in 1994 and just got her boards this June??? Plus it is in the ER!

In the Heart of Texas, one hospital pays $18.50 per hour
with night and weekend differential - don't know how much,
while another one pays $18.00.
One has a two year payout of a sign on bonus to help
with school loans that amounts to $2.50 an hour, or $10,000
for the two years at $5,000 per year for one and an unknown
amount for the other.
In the Metroplex - Dallas-Ft. Worth, the rumor is that they
pay higher, but the cost of living is also higher depending
on where you live.
One of the problems with RN pay is the patient census, which
varies throughout the year. Admins have a tendency to think
in terms of what the RN's make for overtime PRN. Of course if
you are too tired to enjoy life, the money is irrelevant.
I just read a post from someone who identified themselves as
a recruiter. They were complaining about those who are
interested in salary instead of the important stuff. Guess they
pay low.
Sure the environment and benefits count. But does the money.

Dietta - I agree with you. Money is by no means the only important thing, but it is one of them. We are professionals and should expect to be paid as one.
I am considering offers from the Triangle area in NC. I got offered $18 and change by one and $19 and change by another - both teaching hospitals. I live in Central VA and have been offered over $21 here - though the cost of living is similar. Both the NC hospitals say the pay is non-negotiable. Here they have some flexibility.
Anyone have any info or experience with this? I want to move to Triangle, but not for about $2.50 an hour less!

Hospital where I just started on Med-surg floor as a new grad is 24.85/hr, $2.00/hr extra on weekends. Next week I start on nights and will work 7pm-7am $3.00/from 3-11 and $4.00 for 11-7am

I am a LPN that just completed a BSN program. I am interested in finding out more about what your friend does as a new RN that she makes so much money. Is that an agency or per diem rate?
Thank you,
Patty
LPN in PA and FL
In South East Florida a new graduate RN makes $21-$22 per hour. In South East Pennsylvania a new graduate RN makes $27-$28 per hour.
I hope that helps.

I was wondering the same: low salary = low cost of living; high salary = high cost of living. I am moving to Kansas where the starting pay for a new grad is roughly $17.80, from what I have been told. But the cost of living is low. A home with 4 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, 2 car-garage, 1600-2,000+ square feet, full finished basement & in a NICE area can be bought for $120,000 & sometimes LESS! I am in Las Vegas and was just watching the news & there was mention of teachers leaving the area because they are able to sell their home here & move to other areas & buy a home outright. Also, teachers from other areas cannot afford to move here. A couple just said that the home they bought for $225,000 is now worth half a million, so they couldn't afford NOT to sell it. Ok, I'm getting off the subject... :)
I live in KCMO and from what I'm told, new grad nurses can start off with 23.00 per hour for days, plus night and w/e differentials. It depends on the hospital. I know Truman Medical Center start their grads off with 24.00 per hour, plus a 5.00 night differential.
As far as the real estate, it is very good to buy a house here. I purchased my home in 1999 for 74K and it is now worth 125K. You can get a very nice home, 4-5 bedrooms, 3 car garage, 3 1/2 baths for about 200-250K, depending on the area in the city. Once I graudate from nursing school, my plan is to sell my home and have my dream home built.
