Nurses New Nurse

Hello all. just reading different threads and wondering what does the starting salary look like for a grad nurse? i live the in Atlanta area so any ball park figure will do. thanks!

Specializes in ED, Cardiac Medicine, Retail Health.

Just accepted a position at a Boston Hospital. New grad wages are $28.00/hr

The hospital where I work here in Vegas is 23.38/hr for new grads with a 2.10 shift differential for nights and 1.00 for weekends.

$38-$42/hr for new grads in my area of N. California. But like others said, the cost of living is sky high!

Specializes in general nursing.

it depends on the country over here in ghana a graduate nurse with diploma in registered general nursing takes home $400 a month and works for about 220 hours a month. really sad but quiet ok for ghana standard..

Specializes in LTC, med-surg, critial care.

I'll be starting at $34/hr and the cost of living is pretty low where I am.

Specializes in Oncology, Emergency Department.

Anyone know starting salaries in Milwaukee, WI??

I am starting in a level 3 NICU as new grad in Maryland and they pay 29.10/hr for nights.... :mortarboard: Love the low end of that totem pole!!! Gotta start somewhere especially when you're offered the job of a lifetime!

Good luck

I will be graduating in dec 07 and we are thinking of moving to the Baltimore area soon after graduation. Do you know what the starting salary in the Baltimore area is? Thanks!

Wow, I must be living in a bad area (NW Ohio), because starting pay around here is between $13-16/hr. But that is for an LPN, RN's make about $2-3 more an hour. I heard in the city (about an hour away), pay can be 5-7 more than here, although the cost of living is also higher there.

San Francisco is starting at $40 for new grads. But the cost of living is insane.

Cali's cost of living can be very tricky and cut into those higher wages but, I've found it's still worth it. As the old saying goes ... sometimes you have to spend money to make more money.

I'm also making $40 an hour as a new grad with the California Department of Corrections, but I live out in the desert which is much cheaper than the Bay Area. My mortgage payment is only $1200 a month.

On the other hand, I do have to drive for that money and spend a lot more on gas with Cali's high gas prices (about an extra $600-700 a month) But, even with that expense I'm still netting $1,500 a month more after tax and the extra gas expense than if I was working at a local hospital ... not including overtime at $60 an hour.

I usually make an extra $1-$2K a month with OT. And in three years the pay gets up to $46 an hour, almost $70 an hour with OT. So it's worth it ... although that higher pay does bump you into a higher tax bracket and Cali's income tax rate does go up as you make more money. So I'll probably start putting my OT money and pay raises into a 401K to lessen the tax bite.

I've also thought about moving closer to save on gas but, even with the equity in my house and falling housing prices I'd probably still have to pay more than what I'm paying for my house now and, the property tax would definitely be higher ... potentially wiping out the gas savings. Besides, I'm also within driving distance to other correctional facilities so if other job opportunities open up at least I have the option of transferring there if I want to.

It averages between 24-32/hour. It depends on the hospital you work in.

Good luck to you
