RN On-call car plates/sign on cars

I'm just curious if you guys ever get past a traffic violation like overspeeding when the police officer sees that you have an "RN On-Call" plate/sign on your car?

I see a lot of these plates and I wonder what purpose they serve aside from broadcasting that the one inside the vehicle is an "RN On-Call".

I'm trying to understand what you're implying.

Those signs are suppose to "allow" speeding?

That sounds like a major safety issue.

At my hospital, we have 30 minutes to make it to work from the time of being called in--that includes drive time.

We don't use signs.

Wow, no one there lives more than 30 minutes from the hospital? Are you supposed to sit in the parking lot in scrubs clutching your cell phone waiting for work to call?

People live 1 hour away.

So, if their choice is to live one hour away...does that excuse them from being there within 30 minutes?

The ONUS is on the person on-call....not the other way around....

You're implying from your reply that it is a bit too much to ask, so guess what?

Don't work there--simple, isn't it?

P.S. Hopefully, if you need an Open Heart Team or a Neuro Team to help you, they all don't live too far away...you'd be in big trouble...

I think if you have one of those vanity type RN plates your just asking for someone to suddenly cut in front of you so you can cover their, "Owe my neck hurts" when you bump their rear. Lots of people think nurses are loaded.

Hospitals I've worked at included in the on call policy specifically that all traffic laws were to be obeyed.

If they're getting away with breaking the law with those plates, I'm getting one that says "God on call." Heck, I've been told I have the body of a God! (Budha).

when i was in the icu one of the attendings there who lived >45 minutes from the hospital used to stay in house to help the interns/residents when he was the attending on call.

Now that Im looking for a job one of the places that gave me a "sample contract" had that we needed to live within a 10 mile radius from the hospital.

just curious but what state is this? I've never seen any sign like that or similar to that where I'm from.

I disagree with this idea. How would I feel if, because I was speeding, I caused a horrible wreck and injured someone? AWFUL. The job can wait; I will get there safely, rather than become a patient due to careless driving. I understand your point of view, but if we allowed EVERYONE who felt speeding was warranted due to their personal situation, things would get messy. If being on call means you are needed IMMEDIATELY, then there is always the option of sleeping in-house. I did this when I lived 45 minutes from work, especially when the weather was dangerous and would making driving at all hazardous.

Who in the world has obeyed all traffic laws, regardless of circumstance? Let's get real here!

No-they do not help-even if you are in your scrubs....

Not putting anything having to do with my husband's job or my job.

Plus, we share vehicles-I may drive one and he may drive the other.

otessa

I was once on the funeral detail when serving in the military. Our supervisor placed the folded flag on the dash in front of his seat for that purpose, should we have problems on our way to an assignment.

I'm not getting the people who are like oh don't get vanity plates because someone will use it as an excuse to bump you and people will report you for not stopping if there is a traffic accident. I think that ludicrous! First of all, people loan out their cars to friends/family members all the time. There is absolutely no way someone can report you and you get in trouble for not stopping if you see a car wreck because A) they can't prove it was you driving the car and B) I'm not aware of any law that says I'm obligated to stop if I see a car wreck. [i may feel morally obligated to, but that's besides the point]

Unbelievable. If someone wants to get vanity plates that's their business. People are wayyyyyy too concerned about what other people are doing with their lives when it has nothing to do with them.

I think you'd be surprised how many of us have never intentionally broke a traffic law. Some of us don't believe in picking & choosing what laws we want to follow.

I don't think he/she meant that those who broke the law did it intentionally. Sometimes we do break traffic laws unintentionally which is what he/she is trying to say. No one is a perfect driver. I know I'm not :)
