RN to MD programs?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

hi everybody,

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of an RN to MD program. My friend says there is such a thing, but she does not know which school offers it.

Thanks for your help

My sisiter in law lives in Montana and is thinking about starting a two year bridge program which is RN to PA. Dont know about RN to MD.

I know some RNs in my area that are getting their MDs. They do the complete med school thing like everyone else. They needed all of the required courses for admission and they had to attend all medical classes with all other students. I have never heard of another way.

Wouldn't RN to MSN (NP) be a better option? I'd rather be a NP than a PA.

Specializes in ORTHOPAEDICS-CERTIFIED SINCE 89.

There's one in Antigua that advertises in some of the journals. Nurse to MD in 3 years.......I think it's Health Science College or something like that. When you graduate you can work as a doctor OR NURSE!

If they were a nurse going in, then I would suppose they could work as a nurse when they get out. Although it's good to hear that the med school doesn't screw them up so much that they forget how to be a nurse. :chuckle

Specializes in ER, ICU, Corrections.

I am getting to old to go back to school. Now when I take college classes I take them for fun and the enjoyment of expanding my brain. Have never heard of a RN->MD but have heard of RN-> PA or NP. Good luck on your search. :roll :roll

Specializes in ICU, nutrition.

I have not heard of any programs that are particular to RNs bridging to MD, but there are some threads on this website that have to do with RNs who have become MDs or DOs (or are in the process):

Scroll down to SDN student forums and then take a look at Health Professionals--RN/NP and Pre-allopathic and Pre-osteopathic. There are many threads about RNs becoming doctors (some good, some negative).

Good luck to you!

Trust me, I work for a PA program, there is no such thing as a Rn-MD program. Two totally different approaches to health care. Alot of our PA students eventually go to medical school though. Essentially rendering PA school a waste of money and time. PA school credits don't transfer to med school. The students still have to take the basic medical science courses (biochemistry, gross anat, microbiology, neuroanatomy, pharmacology) like all of the other students.

Tell your friend if she wants to be an MD, go ahead and apply to medical school.

For God's sake, there are medical schools that admit students right out of high school, just to prepare them for the rigors of medical school. Med school is a completely different animal.

I also thought that the site was very negative towards RN's. I think that doctors act like they are God's and nurses are more caring. Doctors are in and out. In my opinion I would consider a career in nursing instead of medicine. If its a money issue there are NP's, CRNA"s, etc. Not to hate on doctors or nothing but there website is very boring compared to allnurses.com!!!!

I disagree, not all MD think they are gods and not all nurses are caring!!!!! I don't knock anyone for becoming a MD, in fact one who does with nursing under their belt would be an excellent physician because they see both sides of the coin. I know each area has their pros and cons and you just have to outweight them. I know this at least med students get support from their instructors, unlike nursing school where it becomes a do or die situation, making you choose between your family, plus lying about how you are valued, yeah right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love being a nurse. But nursing as a whole needs to keep it real stop telling lies to these new grads.

Not true Teshiee, my fiance is in med school and he says his instructors tell his class every day how incompetent they are (hmm, sounds kinda like nursing school)!! One of my current nursing school classmates went to podiatry school and he said it is the same way there too. I think it is the whole health care profession that treats their students like crap.
