Recommended supplemental books please!!!!

Published

Hello everyone. I am starting nursing school next week (accelerated), and I just purchased my books :angrybird10: over $500. But anyways, Ive read a lot about people saying that supplemental books are really helpful, for examples rationales books. Any books you guys recommend? I am taking fundamentals of nursing I and II (summer semester), health assessment, intro to nursing, and nutrition (all summer courses).

Thank You!!!!

For me and my fellow students, the Davis Success Series is incredibly helpful. Fundamental Success was a necessity for me-it really gave a lot of practice into thinking as a nurse and answering exam questions, and also encompasses everything from medication administration to nutrition to wound care-everything you will probably cover in your Fundamentals class and more. This series also gives the rationale for each answer, and the books are nicely formatted. I would also reccommend looking for Pediatric Success, MedSurg Success, and Pharmacology Success. They should not be used in place of studying, but are awesome resources that provide many more practice questions than the ATI or Evolve practice exams. :) Also, it is free to set up an account on Evolve-you can search for the particular textbook that your class is using (Ex: Nutrition), and it will give access to short quizzes or case studies. Not all books are listed, but if they are, it is a great tool to use.

This series is GREAT. I have the Patho one and will be purchasing some others for my upcoming semesters. Everything is laid out in outline form, the questions are NCLEX style, and the rationales and strategies are great.

My school had an NCLEX review class that ran the whole semester and we used the Saunders Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX-RN Examination as a textbook. It has TONS of practice questions in the book and comes with a CD with even more practice questions. It is very dry because it covers everything, but I think it's a great book because all the information you need to know is there and I wish I'd had it to use earlier. The school also required us to purchase the Evolve HESI Case Studies for one class, and those are fantastic.

I LOVE the Made Incredibly Easy books for content, and love the reviews and rationales books, for, well, the reviews and rationales!

Thank you guys. I already ordered the Saunders nclex review book. I cannot wait to get my other books so I can start studying. Any iphone apps you guys use to help you in your studies? Thanks!!!!:cat:

You will want to get the Anatomy Coloring Book and the Physiology Coloring Book, both real texts that have saved a lot of people's bacon in nursing school and beyond. You also want to get the NANDA-I 2012-2014, THE authoritative book on nursing diagnosis even if they tell you to get a "nursing care plan book," because the NANDA-I will give you a much better understanding of what it all means. Really.

Spend about $50 on Amazon, free 2-day shipping for students, and those three books will be on your desk by the weekend. You can thank me later.

I haven't heard of this one. Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like it gives you a review of information AND practice NCLEX style questions. Is this correct? I thought about buying the Success series but since it only had test questions, I wanted something more. Maybe this is it.
