a modicum of common sense to be shown in my office...

No kids walking in holding bare hands to their bleeding noses then looking at me like I just invented the wheel when i offer a tissue.

Nobody coming in with a deer in the headlights look for a paper cut

No kids looking in the drawers of the medicine cart when i suggest they get an ice pack from the freezer

nobody walking out of my bathroom and leaving the water running (how does this happen??)

Nobody coming to me in the last 10 minutes of the day for the sore arm that's been hurting them for about 3 days. NO NO NO

oh, my list can go on...

what do you guys want?

The 10 minutes left in school with 3 week old non visible knee pain just happened today.

All I really want is for you to NOT text your mom while you are in class to come pick you up 'cause you are sick and have your parents get to my office first. Talk about deer in the headlights looks- from ME!

No more, "I'm cramping so much I can't run at PE or walk". If you can't even walk then you can't walk between classes and if the pain is so unbearable why are texting on your phone and laughing while you were waiting outside my office.

No more, "My stomach hurts. Can I lay down in here during this period". No. Go to class or go home.

No more asking me to do things they need to go to the Dr's office for i.e. remove stitches, read TB test, diagnosis a skin rash, determine a fracture with my x-ray eyes, determine if a student is going in to labor or trying to get out of class, taking a student's BP every day for a week with no Dr. note because the parent doesn't have time to take them every day to the office.

And..no more, "I have a fever, threw up, etc., but I need to take this test/can't miss any more school/turn in homework". No! Go home! You are legitimately sick! I don't care about your teacher! I care about you going home and getting better and not spreading what you have to others.

1. Stop sending your kid to school and telling them if they do not feel better to go to the nurse and you will come get them. You will be getting a phone call before you even get out of the parking lot.

2. If your kid was in the ER until 2:00 in the morning - I don't care what the ignorant physician tells you- keep them home the next day!!!

3. I want every parent to buy a thermometer and USE it.

4. I want to get it through the SPED departments thick skulls that burping and clearing the throat is rude but not an excludable condition. And no, bringing them back every 7 minutes will not change my mind!

5. I want teachers to stop having other students roll a kid down in a chair with wheels because the kid is nauseated or dizzy. Come on!! Accident waiting to happen.

6. I want kids to stop telling me they threw up in the bathroom. Come on, you guys have google - can't you come up with something new???

7. I would like for students to leave any band-aid, bandage, wrap I have applied in place for more than 1 class period.

8. I want what happens at home to stay at home. Especially after your mom"did nothing" for it.

9. Don't make it seem like you are dying, have me call 72 different phone numbers, have you play with my BP cuff for 2 hours, ask me what is wrong with every other student that enters and then when mom is now on her way say you feel better and want to go to art class.

I could go on and on......

^^^^ Yes, yes!!! a thousand times yes!!! Today I had a parent call in at 2:30 (school's out at 3:00). Asked if her kids came up to see me for anything today. No, I responded. Well, that's good she replied, they were up all night vomiting but they must feel better now..........AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

mc3 :banghead:

Oh, a cute thing that happened. Little Kg boy, cute as a button. I checked him over and he was fine, just wanted to visit. When he was ready to go back to class, he asked if I could meet him at the end of school and walk home with him to his house :)

I would like....

-Students to knock before entering my office. I have posted a sign RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEIR FACE if they stand outside my door with their hand on my doorknob that requests they do this, and I still have kids that come barging in here like they own the place. I make them go back in the hall and knock for practice.

-Students to pay attention to the 6 other students waiting in my office. Don't march up to my desk as soon as they walk in expecting that I will drop what I am doing to take care of your blister.

-And on the same note, don't assume you own the place because I see you 3 times a day every day for your diabetes. You still need to knock before you enter my office.

-The student to wipe the smirk off his face when he shows up in my office at the same time every day for a "headache" which coincidentally gets him out of math class. Guess what buddy? Your math teacher happens to be my best friend, and we've talked (professionally, of course!)!

-Students to not show up within the first 20 minutes of the bus unloading, requesting to go home for some ailment. Try to stick it out at least an hour.

- Parents/guardians who have 557 different phone numbers to call when trying to reach said parents/grandparents/step-parents/aunts/uncles because their child is sick or injured to pick up at least 1 phone when I call!! And just because the school is calling doesn't always mean I want you to come to school and take responsibility for your sick child, sometimes I just need to talk to you and run something past you, or even just ask a question.

-P.S. I don't carry cold medicine and I am not a pharmacy!!

Yes to all of these!!

oh and how i agree with the thermometer thing! i had a parent rip me apart this morning because i told her darling to come back in 20 so i could scarf down my lunch instead of checking on the minor headache she had since 3rd period (i know the audacity). When i asked what the child's temp was she said i didn't check -she doesn't have a thermometer, but she felt warm (they are 3 dollars at walmart!). Is she coming in today? I don't know. Her father would decide... but people have died in the 20 minutes it would have taken me to eat. Drama mama... i don't need this

To be able to eat for 20 minutes....the front desk wonderwoman/supermom/ubersecretary meets her own families EVERY. SINGLE. NEED. To the point of taking their adult children who are well employed and making well over 100k (she has shared this, I'm not making assumptions and knowing the fields they are in concur) on all expense paid vacations, cooking and bringing dinner to them because these two professional people) "cant cook".... you see where I am going with this.....and she carries it over to the kids here.

A student has a headache.... I get called. They need to lie down. I get called. Their foot hurts (and has ALL FREAKIN DAY!) I get called. With a sing song voice over the radio. " I have a student who REALLLY needs to see you". I am screwed, because I cannot ignore a "Really needs to see you" call. Funny thing, when the other secretary covers, she will ask, "Can it wait 10 minutes ?" and shockingly enough, most often, IT CAN!!!!

Like any of us, I have no issue taking care of a kid who needs me or if there is an emergency.....but for the love of GOD, we do NOT need to be immediately accessible for every little thing. They go to the ER or walk in clinic and they will sit for WAY longer than it takes me to eat!!

Rant over an I thank you for listening and understanding!:D

Interrupting me at lunch for little things drives me crazy. I find I need to gently remind our grandmotherly secretary (sounds like yours above NutmeggeRN), who wants to take care of everyone, that I should only be interrupted for emergencies at lunch; heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing or bones sticking out. Anything else I will check in on when I come back. It's 30 minutes for goodness sake not 3 days!

We are people too. We need to eat, drink and occassionally use the restroom. I eat in 1 minute increments. 2 bites, stop nosebleed, wash hands, rinse, repeat. Over 30 minutes - usually 6 is spent eating.

Now, what really has me curious is the fact that when I leave in the afternoon, there is a ton of kids still in the building. Athletics, after school tutoring, choir practice, knitting club, etc. Do any of theses kids ever have a nosebleed, papercut, nausea??? If so, somehow it seems to get handled!!

I have started eating my breakfast at 7:50 (10 minutes before my office is to open, mind you), gotten two bites and not been able to finish it until 3:10 (10 minutes after dismissal).

So many teachers have called the last couple of days. Subs = every single kid coming to see me. Ugh. And subs doesn't talk to anyone, so same kid is able to con every sub into letting him/her visit.

Also: stop sending me every kid at the end of the class period. It may be your rule, but now right before every bell I have a line of students waiting to see and they are all very late to next class and at least half of them don't really need to see me. If they could wait until the end of the period, they are probably fine.

All I really want at this point is to go one day without a parent making me feel like scum or a teacher ignoring my rules because they can't be bothered. I want to go one day without regretting taking this job. :sorry: But I think that's more about me, and less about the job itself.
